Can't believe it... the grackles come to the pond waiting for the water to thaw in the morning & the they take a bath in that frigid water!!!! Are they 'Finnish' grackles that dive into the icy water but here no sauna to fly to later!

Many birds head south in winter but the ones that stay make use of a "counter current heat exchanger" blood system that keeps them from freezing.

Of course if you put up a heated birdbath you will eventually have a flock of grateful winter birds that don't have to use precious calories to heat the water

Thanks rachel! I have neighbors with horrible huge mulberry trees with roots that invade our lawn & flower beds for water as they never water any thing or clean their yard. Yet they say I have an 'unsanitary yard' as I feed the birds from a 'thistle sock' near a birdbath in my flowerbed! They say the birds come to feed & then go to roost in their mulberry trees & 'dump' on their cars parked there! The birds roost there at night all year anyway whether I feed them or not & I feel the solution (!! ha) would be to cut down those neglected trees! Those trees are no longer legal to plant in the city so hope these have a short life expectancy!

I love my Sears Kenmore glass top. Two years now. The main burner I use has got some scratching around it, which might actually be pitting. But I haven't really really tried to clean it either. I do shoot it with something and scrub with scouring pads. But there's still something there. Not bad. I use cast iron on it and have no issues. It has a double oven - small one on top and large one on the bottom. I use the small one a lot. Pizza, cookies, etc... But for canning, I built a small house in 2005 with intentions of using it as the summer kitchen eventually. So I bought a Jenn-Aire electric cooktop that had raised/canning coil burners available. So I bought that at the same time so I'd have it when I needed it. Works great! I had a major jelly/jam overflow a couple years ago that got down under the burners and into the frame/box of the base unit. The modular burner units lifted right out. I had to disassemble them so I could get to the cooked on sugary mess that was also inside them. But they just screw together, so no big deal. Put everything back together eventually and was on my merry way again. The canning burner is taller so there is more room for air flow, and keeps the sides of the larger pot from being so close to the stove top and the center downdraft vent cover. It has a ring around it to help keep the heat directed up at the pot and not out to the sides. I really like it!

Wow. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Bishop8 - it's a fire hazard to have towels too close to a baseboard heater. I believe the distance must be 8" between the top of the heater and the bottom of the towels, which should be fine, except for people and kids who fling the towel over the bar so that it slides down almost to the floor. Billl - yes, that's exactly what I want to do, heat the floor surface not so much the air. You said infrared heater. I think of those when I think of the old-fashioned bathroom ceiling heaters you still see occasionally in motels. Are you saying they make infrared baseboard or wall heaters? Do you know any brands you could point me to? Davidro - as I mentioned in my OP, I am not going to pull up floor tile, because I would never be able to re-do the marble floor tile to match the existing marble tub surround and shower walls. Also, this bathroom is an interior ensuite to the master bedroom - i.e. they share the floor structure, and there are no outside walls in the bathroom. But the bedroom floor feels fine, because it is not marble. It is the marble that is the issue, not the floor structure underneath the marble. Birdgardner - I thought of the attic too, which is actually little more than a crawl space above the bathroom. I checked up there again, and it is quite well-insulated. As I mentioned in my OP, you can feel the marble through slippers, and I should have mentioned they are the thick slippers which are normally warm! I am thinking of chucking the whole idea of a heater (and the cost) and getting a thick rug. Maybe I'll post a new thread on this Forum to ask for suggestions for bathroom rugs. Only problems with a rug is that it won't cover the entire standing area, and I am not a fan of rugs in bathrooms because they are dust/hair/powder/sprays traps. I guess there is no ideal solution, but I must weigh the pros and cons of all the solutions provided here. Thanks so much!

Doubtful there's "real" softener in Tide plus a Touch of Downy. The description doesn't say anything specific about softener ... just that it has ingredients that help provide a slight bit of softness. Looking at the online ingredient list -- surfactants, process aids, fragrance, polymers, enzymes, soil capturers, brighteners, colorant, opacifier -- none are specifically stated as a softening agent. Comparing the ingredient list of Ultra Downy, the stated softening agent in the Downy is not in the Tide. Likely the Tide+Downy angle is fragrance marketing.

woodnymph... No, The Moosewood was located ( and still is) in the basement of an old brick school one block from the center of town ( now The Commons). A photo of it the way I remember it is in the first Moosewood cookbook). You might have gone to the one just before you come down the hill into Ithaca coming from the south. It was french country? The name was french......cannot recall it.

Mulberry trees are a wonderful boon and food source for birds as well as an overgrown yard that is not prayed with toxic pesticides and has plenty of new growth plant food and poison-free insects for the birds.

Nature lovers now often know to leave their branch and brush cutting piles in the yard to provide protection for the birds where they can keep warm in winter and hide from hawks during the day. My branch cutting piles used to be filled with fledgling Carolina Wrens and those of other species in the spring. It is often advised to even add your old Christmas trees to the pile. Neat, sprayed, groomed yards only look good to Western, English manor style people as non-western countries have different customs.

Here's a link to a cool article on having a "green" lawn for birds that was on my twitter feed. I follow many avid birders on twitters so get alot of bird information. Of course, many now say it's better to abandon the "lawn" concept altogether but this gives great ideas if you prefer an English style mowed lawn.
