Mild weather North East

Hello folks!

There should be plenty of bluebirds for everyone this spring the first north bound males will be passing north any day now. The last two winters had hammered there population down to record lows. This season is a recovery

year. The last two years I have worked with half a population around 25 pairs

in the late 1990"s when winters were mild had had numbers of over 50 pairs

and they all followed mild winters the birds will race back and fill many box's

that have sat empty for years. Many females will be followed back with numerous males with them. Look for record numbers as the towns across the

USA come alive with calling bluebirds in the next few wks...

Thanks for the information Ray. I had a pair checking out one of my nest boxes this morning. I do hope they are not fooled into thinking it's spring and try to nest too early. There still could be foul weather coming. I sure would love to see record numbers of Bluebirds though.

Well I sure hope the record numbers show up here!! I doubt we will be seeing them anytime soon yet though.

Everyone talked around here about how cold it was in 2009's winter, there was snow that glazed into a dangerous ice surface and I fell more than once tending orchards- one time injuring my ribs enough not to be able to sleep on one side for months. For all that, night temps never got much below zero. I agree that local trends are not at all a way to gauge global climate but we are subjective creatures by instinct. I do worry more about global climate change when my local conditions are particularly warm and become more sanguine when things seem closer to normal, like this morning and the next couple weeks of forecast. I welcome the cold, although I'll be outside in the elements every working day. Wish I could tune down the wind though- that's what bites.

LL Bean's holiday commercial ("The snow is coming down on this New England town...") makes the NE seems so charming! And then I think about being cold all of the time...it makes 90/90 summers (90 F, 90% humidity) seem downright bearable. For those of you who dream of moving south, you'll feel right at home here in the NC Piedmont. We have a HUGE influx of folks from NJ and NY! Yes, our summers are hot and humid, but the weather is delightful from October through June. Of course, we're getting a bit of that cold air here as well -- our low on Friday night is forecast to be around 10 F (very unusual), so I too am taking precautions with my figs and other potted plants. Good luck to everyone... As for the global warming comments, the shift to the "climate change" label hardly qualifies as vacillation. Rather, it better reflects the reality of what we face -- an overall, average warming trend that is likely to make weather a whole lot weirder (the key here is "weather" as opposed to "climate" -- there's a big difference). Some areas will be warmer, some colder, some drier, and some wetter. The climate will be warmer, but local weather may be anything but.

Here we go yet again... mild and rain with a high of 53 Friday in NYC. Can you believe it Alex. I am not complaining and the palms are doing well. We got about 1.5 snow Saturday which was all melted by Monday. This is a southern-style winter so far. Islandbreeze, your low of 11 is not bad for your zone and you're having a break this winter as well. The cold air in the mid west sometimes moves northeastward and sometimes the core of cold air slides back into Canada over the Great Lakes before reaching coastal New York City. So we do see some of the cold but often miss the bitter cold part. When I see temps in Pittsburg, PA for example in the teens during a cold snap, its usually moderated to the 20s by the time we see it the next day. Wetsuiter, smart idea to experiment with palm seedlings. NJ, you got the most snow on Saturday it sounds like.

We got just under 6 inches of snow more than originally forecasted and count ourselves lucky given what the eastern part of the state had to endure. We had a lot of drifting from the winds so today we were able to get out and get the snowblower going to clean up as much as we could before our fingers started going numb. Sun is shining but the winds are picking back up again. Our weather forecast is calling for more snow in the coming days along with zero temps. All the plants are tucked under snow again but the deer have been visiting as I can see the prints in the snow. Julia

I was hoping for the same thing. They've had it easy this winter. Kendra, for the sake of all of us, I hope you're wrong about the weather!

I hope to see that 1st male BB of the season show up the 1st week of March! That's when they normally return to N.E. Ohio. However I've seen them here 2 or 3 times this winter. I think some never leave.

I'm sure some never leave. If they stay all winter up in NH and MA, I can't imagine why some wouldn't stay in OH.

I have heard that some overwintered in Green Bay WI this year! Not here though! I still have at least a month before I will be seeing any Blues I am sure....I cannot wait!!

True, Kendra. I'm glad I'm not that far north! Our winters can be bad, and long enough! Should see that 1st male of the season in 3 - 4 weeks! Not long folks! The season is right around the corner!

Not sure for some, but ours start mating in March so I consider it nesting season.
