Videos: bluebirds checking inside of nest box

Hiyah,

I finally think that I've figured out how to post to YouTube. I decided that this year I am going to try to keep up with what's going on and keep better notes, photos, and videos.

If you go to YouTube and search on 2bluwings you will hopefully find my first 3 videos, two of which will show you what goes on when a pair of blues decide to check out a nest box. I am assuming, and hoping, that they will indeed use this box again this year. It seems a bit early for them to be doing this but after all March is only a few weeks away.

Let me know if the videos are working for you. Like I said, I'm just a newbie when it comes to things like this. I'm hoping to set up a blog, too, but we shall see.

Linda, I tried to pull up these videos to no avail. Are there more specific instructions? Keep in mind, I'm sooooo computer challenged, so the problem is likely ME!

I googled YouTube, then entered 2bluwings in the search, but found nothing to do with your video. Thanks.

Linda, I was able to view all 3 videos. I know where you'll be this nesting season--glued to your tv or computer screen, watching Bluebird T.V.!!! Nice job!

Awwww..so sorry to hear of this. That storm came through my yard too, and took one of my Bradford Pears down. It landed across my driveway, and luckily did not hit the house or our basketball goal. Gosh, it came through really fast. If you are not seeing them back at the house at all, then they have abandoned the nest. You don't need to wait the 2 weeks to remove the nest. Give it a few days, and when you are sure that they have abandoned, go ahead and remove the nest. Maybe they will build there again. There is still plenty of time.~~Angie

I just did this too! They will abandon the nest if you don't take care of it, ASAP!! tonight if you can!. You need to do a nest change. There is good info on the sialis site about nest changes and how to do it. I got as much dried grass as I could and put it in an empty butter container. I tried to line it with pine needles, but I don't know where my female got hers?!! It took a few days, but then the second egg arrived along with a third! She was incubating a few days until a wren, I think, got two of them. Now they built another nest in my other box.. after all that work!! then you have to take care of the ants. They say grease the pole.. I put the liquid ant killer at the base on a plastic lid covered with a larger lid.. I hoped it would distract them from the nest, but I can't tell for sure if it worked since they moved.. but I didn't see any more ants in there. Good luck and keep us posted!

I make my own using 8 inch plastic pipe about 12 inches long. I cut out a bottom from 1 inch thick pine, drill holes in the wood as a drain, then staple a wire basket to the wood bottom out of 1/4 inch hardware cloth. The top can be tricky to attach, and I am still experimenting with different ways of doing this. Sometimes I use roofing shingles and sometimes I cut up soft drink cans to make my own shingles. I make the opening oval shaped (seems to be most effective) I have been using these boxes for almost 20 years and have had great success with them.

Puzzling bluebird nest and nesting behavior

We have been blessed to have bluebirds nest in our bluebird house for several seasons now. When I noticed the male and female tending to the box this spring, I took a photo of the nest which showed 5 perfect bluebird eggs (4/29). Two - three days later we noticed that the pair was no longer tending to the nest. The male began to charge at his image in our windows all day every day. The female could be seen at the suet feeder from time to time but not at the bluebird house. A closer check of the house revealed a clump of pinestraw protruding from the entry and so I checked the nest. It appeared that the eggs had been stolen (by raccoons?) and only a small piece of shell was left. The birds were no longer tending to the nest and so I cleaned it out and the pole was greased with cayenne pepper to deter raccoons. Another few days went by and I noticed that the pair was tending to the box again. I waited a few more days and took a photo on 5/10 of the new nest which showed 4 white eggs in it. Ever since then the female bluebird has been diligent in tending the nest, but the male rarely goes to it. I checked the box again today 6/7 and the eggs have not yet hatched. It seems that the hatching is overdue. Are these indeed bluebird eggs? I will avoid removing anything from the nest but I'm just curious about might be going on here. Any advice? I found that as I was entering my videos, a lot of bird videos came up, too. Some of them are quite remarkable.

Kathy, I have been glued to the video feed from the nest box since 2005 so this will be my 5th year. My husband is already lamenting the fact that we'll have only one channel: BirdTV. I told him that I'm going to try this year to bring the video into the computer so he can have his TV :)

Linda, I finally got it! Those nestcams are awesome and I just love seeing the action INSIDE the box! I would love to have one, but heck, nesting season would be long over before I could figure out how to use it! Thanks for sharing.

Donna, glad you could find the vids. Last Nov. or so I got a color video camera just like the B&W. I had planned to test it and make any nest box modifications that would be required to get enough light for the color camera to actually be able to show color.

However, I had my left knee replaced on 9/22/08 and since then I've had much less energy and lots of pain so I had

OMG this is fabulous! I love hearing them! Don't you wonder what they are saying!?! In the Feb 10 video, at the beginning, not the very first sound, but right after that, it's like they are making little baby begging sounds.

Thanks for posting the videos -- it's the first time I've seen inside a nest box.
If you get any more video as they start to build their nest, hatch their babies, etc. please post it on YouTube and let us know --

I don't know if y'all saw my latest post here: "test drive my blog?" Those 2 videos and a lot of photos and stories, are now in my first ever 'blog.' You don't have to have an account there to look at what is just a style of web page--plus the ability to 'follow' what goes on (that is, when I make a new post, you can get an email showing it). I'm hoping to have lots of folks check it out now because when the BB nesting season starts here, I hope to be able to share a lot of what's going on from inside AND outside the box.
