Is the area going to be walked on, or part of a garden area? If it will be walked on, I think any kind of grass will do. If it's garden area, what type garden? By that I mean, do you want evergreen, year round color, winter dormant, flowers, tall grasses, or what?

Oh yea! I guess more specifics would help :). More of a garden area...I would love not to have to mow that area as it's a booger!! Definitely some evergreen ( since erosion would be a year round issue), would love some color. It gets some sun in the morning, but mostly shade. I am still adjusting to the sandy loam part as weird as that sounds. I've always gardened in clay. One of the plants I thought about were holly ferns, but I am not so sure they will like the sand part of the deal.

How about a vining plant? I can't think of any that aren't invasive though. Ivy, asian jasmine, vinca.

I know many people here don't like Asian jasmine, but it is an excellent plant to use on a slope that can't be mowed. I was recently reading an article in Neil Sperry's Gardens Magazine that talked about what to do with slopes that can't be mowed. Asian jasmine is what the author recommended and had a picture of it growing on a slope. It looked very pretty and all you have to do is put down some sort of edging to delineate between the lawn and the slope to make it easy to keep it from creeping into the grass by running a trimming along the edge on both sides.

I would bring in lots of rocks and have a blast terracing it and then work in anything that looks good and drapes or climbs. artimesia valerie finnis combined with prostrate rosemary or irene rosemary, weeping muhly, salvia , crawling thymes, silver ponies foot. one can get prickly pears, that "old Mexico" variety with the huge pads that will cascade after a few years, I would treat it like a flower garden. the rocks will slow the water down and hold it in places. mexican oregano, nolinas, I like chaos in my gardens so I go for a scattered look. an upward slope is a joy to work with. The structure of the rocks then make the plants a place to be.

Great suggestions ya'll!! It's funny, there is alot of asian jasmine all around that area ( just on the other side of the fence and along the fence), but none there. I had been thinking about bring in rocks..lol there is a rock terrace already in place close to this area and we have tons of rocks on our property ( tee hee, only I would get excited that we have a boulder in our backyard!) Can't do cactus because of the dogs ( actually had to pull that out of another area of the yard).
I still need to get a professional on board to make sure we have it covered, but I would think if I create a rock wall of sorts with plants and then put a french drain in along the base of the house I should be good right?

What area of Texas are you? Old mexico is the prickly pear with huge pads and no needles or almost none. The Opuntia cacanapa var ellisiana is the PP with absolutely no needles on it. It will be great fun playing with the drop. one can accentuate the grade with tall plants on top, changing to mid size and low as you go down the slope. Will you see it from windows in the house or a pathway behind the house?

Just south of Denton. Good to know about the prickly pear! Yup you can see the view from my office/guest room. I've never done a slope before, so I am a little intimidated, but that's never stopped me before. :) I was surmising our rock "collection" around the yard tonight and I think I could pull off extending the current wall that is nearby and play off of that in the design. LOL, I sat out on our deck tonight, gardening journal and books in tow just staring out at the spot by our boulder, scribbling down ideas for my memorial garden until it got so dark I couldn't see what I was writing anymore. It's so hard to stay focused on one garden area!

Silver ponies foot is a great noninvasive vine that cascades, is xeric, native , growes from cuttings and rootings. dalea gregii is another native vining cascading ground cover and it blooms blue..
