Birding in Thailand with Alex

Finally went birding with Costa Rican professional bird photographer, Alex Vargas yesterday to Khao Yai National Park.

He used to post here but has his own websites now and has been in Thailand for at least six years now. His photographs are in magazines, books, websites all over the world, even the National Geographic. He also used to be a professional soccer player and model in his younger days, even a semi-pro singer who had a hit song in Costa Rica for six weeks.

Found out how the professionals do it-they leave little to chance. Fellow Thai birders tipped Alex off to the location of a male Blue Pita, so he picked me up at 6 a.m. and we drove to the park, set up blinds, and waited with two other photographers who had also heard the tip and beat us there. They sprinkled some meal worms on the ground to lure out the birds, hid in their blinds, and aimed their cameras.

It was so dark when the birds began to appear that it was probably someone else's flash that made any of my photos turn out. In exchange, Alex tipped them off to the location of a rare migratory flycatcher so off we went after the Pitta disappeared.

Various photographers kept joining us and I also wandered around taking shots at distant birds in the tops of trees.
