Mockingbirds are very territorial. They are also great native birds to have around. Even if you could, I would not discourage them from being in your yard as they have a job to do just like the bluebirds do. If they have been reinforced by getting mealworms so far, you will have to do something to extinguish their behavior. One basic tenet of behavior is "unrewarded behavior eventually extinguishes itself." So, if you make it impossible for them to get any mealworms for a while, they will eventually stop defending the feeder and move on. One way to do this is to stop feeding the mealworms. The bluebirds don't need the mealworms. The mockingbirds will move on if they don't get any mealworms for a while. Another way you can do this is to create a feeder that will not allow the mockingbird to feed from it. A feeder that has holes that are too small for the mockingbird to fit in but will allow smaller birds into it would work to accomplish this. I will include a link to some plans. The thing that you will have to do is to train the bluebirds to recognize the new feeder. This will be hard when they are competing with the mockingbirds. You have to link the two feeders in their minds by gradually changing the feeder over so that the bluebirds connect the worms with the new feeder. The only way to do this is to have the new feeder open for a few days until the blues find them. Like I said this will be hard to do when the mockingbird is chasing them away, so I would stop feeding mealworms for a few weeks and then try this and see if the mockingbird forgets about it and moves on to a new source of food. The other thing you may have a problem with at some point are hawks that will notice the concentration of song birds at the feeder. This seems to be a bigger problem when you feed seeds as you have many more birds frequenting that kind of feeder. This also creates other problems besides hawks, like disease. I have seen enough people end up with hawk problems from artificial feeding to warn you that it could be the next problem you are facing. Hawks are a necessary part of the system as the bluebirds and the mockers, so you should be happy to have them all. The berry bushes in your yard are a natural way to feed everyone, but they double as cover that helps to protect the birds from the larger predators giving them a fighting chance. Oh, that is so sad, I agree with elly, please take him to an avian rehab so they can do the right thing by him. I know it's hard but it's the kind thing to do for him.

Thanks to everyone who tried to console me instead of chastising me, but I can take up for myself. #1, I'm NOT sorry that I said I hit the cat. It's not like I beat him black and blue. I just applied my hand to his backside, not even very hard. I can't even imagine a cat with an identity crisis! The only identity crisis my cats have is that they think they're human. I also spanked my kids. They don't hate me, and neither one of them has an identity crisis. #2, I'm NOT going to find another home for my cat. I've had cats all my life, some killed things, some didn't. I didn't send them anywhere else to live. #3, The cat did not bring me a whole baby bird as a prize, he ATE IT! Yes, that's what cats do, but finding bits and pieces of a baby bird on your dining room floor is DISTRESSING! I love birds, so it made me angry. What if your dog brought a kitten in and tore it apart on your DR floor, leaving bits of fur and bones lying about? Would you be upset, or would you just say "Oh, he's just doing what dogs do." Does it make it any better because it's "just a bird?" Birds have separate personalities, and are very individual. Even chickens, ducks and geese. I once had a neighbor's dog break into my chicken pen and kill all my baby chicks. He didn't eat them, he just killed them. I threw a brick at him. I didn't hit him, but I wish I had. And I would not have felt at all bad if I had. I had a friend whose dog tore his cat to pieces right in the LR. He took it out back and shot it, because he said it now had a taste for blood. #4 Quoting the Wikipedia to me, (which in my opinion is about as reliable as the weather in Florida) to prove a point is just...I don't even know what it is, but it ticks me off. I'm not going to defend my actions. I'm sure some of you, even those who jumped on me, have done worse things in your life than pop your kitten on its bottom, so I'll quote the bible "Let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone." Hi ghoghunter, I loved the whole Narnia series but most specially Voyage Of The Dawn Treader and The Magicians Nephew and The Last Battle. A Tale Of Two Cities is my favorite Dickens and I read it once a year. Sydney Carton is my favorite literary character. To Kill A Mockingbird I first read in English class in tenth grade. Liked it then but have more appreciation for it now, years later. Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes kept my kids laughing and myself. I think I liked them better than the original tellings! I always liked when the Prince in Cinderella gets some spine and when being pressured by the ugly step sister cries 'Of with her nut!' and she's beheaded it fit!! (You have to read it to understand) I love a Christmas Carol though I don't celebrate Christmas. All of Laura Ingalls Wilder is close to my heart. I own Little Women and keep it out of loyalty but find it hard to take it to heart, though I do like the movie with Winona Ryder. Hated the one with Katherine Hepburn though I like her in other movies. Taylor Caldwell has been a long time favorite of mine. Ceremony of the Innocent and most especially The Glory and the Lightening. I loved her descriptions of places and decor and what a person was thinking as they did whatever they were to do.
