Where in Ohio are you?.. I'm near Cleveland. I'm assuming this is new construction and a bare ground? Type of seed depends on the area, traffic, and how much attention you plan on giving it. KBB will need a little more work and regular watering. Fescue is a little more forgiving. There are also a lot of decent mixes containing a little of each and some perennial rye. Anyway, watering "sometime in the AM" is not going to cut it. Especially if we keep these temperatures going. Seed cannot dry out once it is saturated or it will be a loss. You need several light waterings a day to keep it going and germinate. It also needs the same treatment for a while after it's growing to establish. The hydrdoseed mix will help retain moisture, but once a day is not going to work in summer. Another option is to go with a basic rye grass for now as it will germinate in 5 days or so and give you grass (again will still need to continue to water until established), and then come fall overseed with a higher quality mix. KBB needs at least 21-28 days to germinate, and fescue somewhere in the middle, 10-20 days.

Your success will depend on the texture of the soil. Some soils liquify will saturated and will not be controlled with the plants suggested. My soil will not erode no matter how steep or how wet. When we bought this property 15 years ago I was concerned after having cleared the slope of a heavy juniper growth and planted it in coyote brush. I could have left it bare and not have erosion. Look at road cuts in your area and get an idea of how easy the local soil slips from a new cut. Al

Local to me but not to you :-) Just do some online searching for companies in your area that provide this service (check out Grassmaster). Hydroseeding is a very efficient and economical way to establish a lawn with a very uniform appearance - that's why it is used so frequently in commercial applications, like freeway verges. If it can stand up well and establish under those sorts of conditions, it will be a piece of cake in a smaller cultivated garden setting!! Hydroseeding involves spraying on a slurry of grass seed, fertilizer and wood cellulose fiber to form almost a mat carpeting the soil. There is minimal concern about leaves or other debris blowing in and disturbing the seed.....it just doesn't happen. Even the birds leave the seed alone :-) Just make sure you lawn area is completely weed-free before the hydroseed.....weed development will be your biggest worry.

What are your high temps in the summer? If the temps get into the 90s, then seeding now is a waste of time. If they stay in the 80s, you might be okay with enough water. Most new grass roots are too tender to take summer heat until they are at least 6 months old. The sod should be fine. If the houses are close together, the only grass that will work is a fescue. They are the most shade tolerant of the cool season grasses. Rye and Kentucky bluegrass need 6 hours of direct sunlight to really become dense. If you have a large unshaded area in the back yard, then a mix of rye, fescue, and KBG would give you the benefits of all of them. A triple mix like that is a little tricky to get started, but it is done all the time. All you have to remember is to not stop watering as soon as the grass comes in. You need to water every day for 3 full weeks to get all the KBG to germinate. The very best time to seed is late summer. For you that might be mid August after the warmer summer heat breaks. With seed you get what you pay for. Ideally you will find a seed with 0.00 Weed and 0.00 Other Crop listed in the Guaranteed Analysis. The problem with weed and other crop is those seeds are the size of dust, so even a value of 0.23% weed could give you thousands of weed seeds.
