Newbie here- Magnolia bog question

Hi All,

I usually hang out on the veggie/tomatoes forum, but I'm glad I found you all. I have a couple of wooded acres on my property next to the house. When I first moved in, I had plans on paths and planting, but got sidetracked. What got me interested again was an article in the local paper about "magnolia bogs". An acidic boggy area caused by seeping groundwater. Features sweet bay magnolia trees. Apparently it is a local feature in this area. I have a stream that runs thru the woods. When I first moved in, I tried to track the source but was dissapointed to find it started in a big old muddy area. I now believe that it is a seep. We have gravel/clay soil and the ideal conditions for a magnolia bog (and wild magnolia trees!). What intrigued me is the potential wildflowers that may be growing in my woods. I can't wait til spring. Long story short, has anyone heard or have experience with this type of bog and what I should look for?

Have you tested the pH of your seepage? Since you describe your soil type as gravel/clay, I would expect the groundwater might be somewhat alkaline. It might very well be acidic though.

If it ever stops raining, I will. I suspect it is acidic, but I'll check. I did find striped wintergreen plants in the woods- didn't know what those little cool plants were until I came here!

Hi Scott! Welcome to the forums and to ponding, it is quite the adventure. My small pond is not much bigger than you are planning, it is around 650 gallons, and it too is just outside my front door, along the front sidewalk to the door in fact. Can you find the filtration and mechanical bits and pieces? Oh, and I should confess this is #3 build on this pond. I am a beginner. By the way, I would do the waterfall part and parcel with the main pond. It will be much easier for you to find and repair leaks without having to worry about fish and plants in the pond. And there will be leaks with a waterfall, and with the plumbing for the bits and pieces. This is a closer up of the filtration. Mechanical and biological. The pump is in an 18 gallon in ground (actually in pond) tub. It is full of mechanical filtration, course to fine. then I put a 4 way manifold on the pump exit to feed the fountain, spitter, biofilter and the future pond expansion biofilter/falls. The biofilter is an 8 gallon or so pot with an aguatic plant in a mesh planter in the top. Water overflows the biofilter pump into a bog pond. The bog pond runs about 5 feet or so along one side of the pond. The bog pond is planted with shallow water plants mostly in clay orchid pots. I decided not to use gravel since the pond is directly under several messy tress. The bog pond flows over a stone wall back into the main pond. The bog pond is about 20 gallons, and I think that is probably too small. As for pumps, I've learned from the folks here that mag drives are the bomb. Pondmaster is good. This is the formula I used to guess-ti-mate pump size: If you have lots of fish then it's better to have a big pump! You'll want to move the total amount of water through the pump within one hours time. This means that a 2.000 gallon pond will need a 2.000 gallon-per-hour pump. Ponds without fish can do quite nicely with a much smaller pump (or even none at all). Different pumps have different electricity requirements. Make sure to check the manufacturer's specifications and then do the math before you buy the pump. You could end up with an inexpensive pump, but it will be far more expensive to run. Total gallons of pond + 3 = Minimum pump size 1" of waterfall/stream surface x 1/2 inch of waterfall/stream depth = 100 gallons per hour Waterfall/stream width x 100 gallons = Total 1/2 inch gallons per hour Total 1/2 inch gallons per hour x total 1/2 inches = Total gallons per hour Watts per hour divided by 1000 = Kilowatts per hour Kilowatts x 0.10 = Kilowatt dollars per hour )KWDH KWDH x 24 = Kilowatt dollars per day I would think that a pondmaster 900 would be the smallest you would want and a 1200 would give you plenty of options for spitters, fountains, and mini-falls. You can strike water wityh a post-hole digger around here. I think it is becoming a marsh becasue of untamed growth. We believe the pond was dug to connect to bay and create a crab inlet or perhaps for fill dirt on an adjacent property. It has been left alone for at least 10 year, maybe longer

California Carnivore is a trusted nursery & has provided more exotic plant when they have them available. You have to check your specials now & then to get lucky for the most exotic species. All my butterworts, including Pinguicula primuliflora (which I bought from Lowes) is long lived. But I donÂt have my book the Savage Garden, my copy was destroyed. The problem is that, while they do have a huge collection of CP (something IÂve seen myself when I personally visited their nursery), they have a limited supply to sell to the public. It takes time for them to propagate enough numbers of their most exotic species to sell to the public. Personally seen where they propagate their plants they plan to sell. Last November they were selling tuberous sundew and they sold like hot bread. I tried to pick up some but I learned about them too late & they sold out fast! You have better luck getting more exotic species if you visit their nursery personally; I was able to get my B52 VFT, Triffid, & Sarracenia alabamensis that way. But one thing I discovered about the B52 is that it is slow growing plant. Reason why they may not offer that cultivar for sale often. This is my B52, still a small plant but its getting their.

Lil The only answer I can give is "maybe". I would pull it out of the soil and look a the bottom. If it is dark and soft, it is rotting. You can cut the bottom off piece by piece until you get to clear, white wood. Disinfect your knife after each cut with alcohol. Then dip in rooting compound and start again. It is important to give the cutting bottom heat to stimulate rooting. Sun drenched concrete works, as do professional heat mats, but some also use a heating pad made for people covered with a water proof material. Does the cutting look wrinkled, like it is drying up? If so, you may want to put it into a container of warm water with a little SuperThrive to see if it plumps up. Then try rooting again. Some also have had success water rooting cuttings. Put them in a container with about 3-4" of water with some ST and place it in a window with sunlight. Some change the water regularly, others don't and it doesn't seem to affect their results. OK, I took a water sample and tested it- yes, acidic. PH either 5.5 or 6.2 (two different types of test strips) and very soft. Surprisingly clear, too.

Sounds like you have the potential for a unique natural area there. I'd keep an eye on it for a year and take note of what is there. One thing worth noting is that the pH isn't very low but it might be sufficient. Here is a list of plants characteristic of a magnolia bog I found at www.mdflora.org

I guess that you are not too far from the development which recently had arson problems. Some members of MD Native Plant Society have been surveying magnolia bogs for years mostly near the Mattawoman. Definitely cinnamon fern (some ancient), pink lady's slipper, and swamp pink can be found there. MNPS will probably lead field trips to Araby Bog in the Spring.

Thanks all. Boy, that is quite a list of plants! Sam, yes I'm in Charles County, but not real close to Araby (closer to Zekiah swamp). I had never heard about it before the fires (they did arrest a group of guys for that stupidness). I didn't realize magnolias were not common in this area- I've got lots! I can't wait til spring. I hope to get a good pair of rubber boots for xmas so I can go explore.

It is worth mentioning that the arrest was of an individual who was a security gaurd at the development. The magnolia bog made the news because some environmental groups had opposed the development. The Sierra Club had written a memo saying "The project will destroy a forest adjacent to state-preserved wildlands and severely degrade one of Maryland's largest magnolia bogs." The story made national news when the fires were initially blamed on "ecoterrorists", something that turned out to be completely unfounded.

An excellent resource for the kind of info you need is the Peterson's field guide to eastern forests. It pictures and describes numerous types of native forests, listing the plant and animal communities that make up each type.

Hi All,

I've been poking around the woodland and have identified at least a dozen of the plants/trees listed by lycopus (above) including Lycopodium (see separate thread on the club moss). I need to decipher the rest of the latin names to see what else I have! It is really a cool little area. Common names only- I can say that I have fringe trees, serviceberry, persimmon, a grove of Paw Paw's with a good crop of fruit, mockernut hickory, native dogwoods, beech (and beech nuts!), sweet bay magnolia, sumac, black locust, pin oak, white oak, sweet gum, tulip poplar, red maple (some big enough to tap for syrup one day), pin cherry, sycamore, sweet gum, striped wintergreen, sourbush (?), holly, and hemlock. And that is just what I have identified. I hope to see some cool plants this spring. I've see skunk cabbage in the past. I got myself a pair of muck boots to slosh around in, I'll let you know what I found.
