Petal Pushers Cooking Across America Cookbook

Hello all you Petal Pushers and anyone of our GW members who would like to participate in helping to create our very first Petal Pushers Cooking Across America Cookbook.

Our group has decided to compile and print a cookbook of all our shared recipes for us to share. Sassy and I have been gathering all the recipes and are beginning to organize them by category. We would love it if everyone would keep sharing their recipes with us here on this thread. All are welcome and encouraged to contribute.

We have found a publishing site that allows us to do our own editing and will print the cookbook at a low cost to all who would like to have a copy. We are doing our absolute best to keep the costs at a minimum and will only be charging for the actual printing and mailing of the cookbook for all who order one. Feel free to ask any questions and we will do our best to answer.

Anyone who is interested in having a copy of the book please post a message here. Even those who already expressed an interest in having one. It will help immensely if we can consolidate orders onto this one particular thread and there will be less chance of us missing someone who wants a copy.

At this time we are finished accepting recipes for the cookbook. We are still taking orders for cookbooks so please post here if you would like to receive a book. The book's price hasn't been set yet as we are waiting to see what the final cost plus shipping will be. It will not be too expensive and will make wonderful gifts for family and friends.

This has been a very fun effort and I feel very honored to have gotten to know so many wonderful cooks from across this wonderful country of ours.

We will be incorporating your pictures into the cookbook with a caption detailing the information about the location and the favorite bloom from your garden.

Now I know it's quite premature to post these pictures, as my project is a long way from finished. However, I'm excited about my progress and I'm thinking that a group of gardens will be able to see the "potential" here. LOL! While you guys have been playing this week, I started work on installing a sidewalk between the end of the house and the new garage. The space is only about 8 ft. wide so my vision is to install this 4' wide walk and then (maybe next year) plant the sides with small hosta and similar sized plants. The walk in the picture is about 15' long. When finished, it there will be about 10' more walk at the 4' width and then it will widen into a "patio" of sorts for another 10-12'. We had a horrid rain yesterday that washed out some of my edge pavers before I got soil packed in around them but that's okay. It won't take long to get back on track. And, here is a picture of the gate I built last year with a plan to install it across the sidewalk, between the house and garage. One year soon, I'll be caught up with those of you who have nearly perfected your gardens. For now, I'm still installing structural elements.

Fran, lol, thanks for NOT telling us! (Eggs & ketchup) It would probably turn me for good and this is only a once in a few months craving so please....lets let it go.....*grin* Dan hope you have a good trip and glad you and Fran have your boxes worked out, no problem! a residual effect of female hormones? Yes, probably! They're again, I craved cakes, pies, pasteries, etc when I was preggers almost 27 years ago, and since can't stand anything sweet. Love pound cake, but don't give me one with icing. Also, before that time I wouldn't eat any kind of greens, but craved them while preggers. Weird. I've eaten them ever since. Annie, sorry but great minds think alike and you're the winner in our book of the simplest and easiest and tastiest receipe! Love it, love it! Not that I don't love everyones else's and have copied them all and will be trying them:))) Tracy, that was so funny about the potato casserole receipe at the party, lol! Thank goodness she knows a good thing when she tastes it! Apparently it calmed her down! lol (Her good fortune, I'm sure) Fran! Congrat's on the iris! You done good girl! Annie, I'm closer to Fayetteville than Fran, I'm only an hour away, my step daughter lives there. Where I live here I'm only 10 miles from the SC/NC line and at the other house about the same to the NC/VA line, guess I like lines, lol. Hey think about it, how easy is it for me to be in 2 places at the same time? lol I'm so glad you don't have to work tonight after all, you sure deserve the time off! Thanks for posting Susie's receipes, she sent them to me too, bless her heart, I told her how my tomato bushes are just worn completely out, though they still have lots of tomato's on them,,all green. Now mind you I picked these off the bushes today, some are green because a storm knocked 2 bushes and frames down, so I had to bring them in. I had 2 pots on the stove blanching when I took this photo. Now mind you, I only have 6 plants, but I've never seen any produce harder. I've got 20 pint packs in the freezer now, I've given my SIL (3) plastic grocery bags full and this is what I picked today! And of course....a little suggie for those in need:)) (Notice the pout forming, my Mom took the pic as she was looking at me tell her to get out of there! lol) She does this u-turn with the bottom lip and 'holds' it there, lol. God I love this kid!!!!!! Sorry, okay, totally sidetracked....thanks so much Susie for the wonderful receipes, girl I have so many more tomatoes out there! I'll need them. Mariann, thank God someone noticed besides me! Thought my computer was going crazy! Its driving me nuts and only happened later today. Hope it straightens out soon, too hard to read. I've always wanted to try Fried Green Tomatoes, I've heard they taste like fried squash, which I love. Only way I'll eat squash. I do love chips in any sandwich, and I've got to try Tracy's receipe! I already know I'll love it! I have all the others copied too, did I already say that? I vote for PP Cooking Across America also! Here are some of my family's fav.s. **Monkey Bread 3 cans buttermilk biscuits 1 c. ice cream, vanilla 1/4 - 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 stick butter 1 c. brown sugar Tear biscuits into bite size pieces. Place in a bundt-type pan. Melt together the remaining ingredients and pour over the biscuits in pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes or when golden brown on top. Tip out onto a serving plate. **Best Barbecues 3 lbs hamburger, browned, drained salt & pepper to taste 1 tsp onion powder 1/2 c. catsup 1 can tomato soup 1 can chicken gumbo soup 1 tsp chili powder 2 tbsp vinegar 2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tsp mustard Simmer all ingredients for 2 hours. Works best in crock pot. **Easy and sooo good Hot Dip 1 can chili without beans 1 pkg. cream cheese 1 lb Velveeta Heat all ingredients and mix well. Serve with tortilla chips. Works great if you cube the velveeta and put all in a crock pot. **Easy Lasagna 16 oz. can tomatos 12 oz. can V8 Juice 6 oz. can tomato juice 1 tsp. Basil 1 pkg. dry spaghetti mix 1 1/2 lb. Hamburger 1 small container Cottage Cheese 1 pkg. mozzerella cheese 8 oz. uncooked lasagne noodles Parmesan cheese Mix tomatoes, v8 juice, tomato juice, basil and dry spaghetti mix. Bring to a boil and simmer 10 minutes. Mix cooked and drained hamburger and sauce. In a 9 x 13 inch pan, layer, starting with hamburger mix, then noodles, cottage cheese, nooodles and end with meat mixture. Top with Mozzarella cheese and sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese. Cover with foil and bake at 350 for 1 1/2 hours. Let stand 20 minutes before serving. Can be frozen after baked. **Cocktail Meatballs 1 lb. raw hamburger 1/3 c. minced onion 1 egg beaten 1 tsp. salt 1/2 c. dried bread crumbs 1/4 c. milk 1 T. parsley flakes 1/8 tsp. pepper 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce SAUCE 1 10 oz. jar grape jelly 1 8 oz. jar chile sauce Make bite size meatballs. Brown. Place in sauce. Heat together until jelly melts. Simmer for 30 minutes or use crock pot. **Scalloped Potatoes and Ham 6 med. potatoes 3 tbsp butter 1 sm onion, finely chopped 3 tbsp all-purpose flour 1 1/2 c. cubed cooked ham 1 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper 2 1/2 c milk 1 tbsp butter Heat oven to 350. Grease 2qt casserole. Thinly slice potatoes to measure 4 cups. Heat 3 tbsp butter in 2 qt. saucepan over med. heat. Cook onion in butter about 2 min.s, stirring occasionally. Stir in flour, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring constantly, until smooth and bubbly, remove from heat. Stir in milk. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Spread potatoes and ham in casserole, cover with with sauce. Dot with 1 tbsp butter. Cover and bake 30 minutes. Uncover and bake 60-70 minutes longer or until potatoes are tender. Let stand 5-10 min. **Potato Salad 6 med. potatoes 1 1/2 c. mayo 1 tbsp. vinegar 1 tbsp. mustard 1 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper 2 med stalks celery, chopped 1 med onion, chopped 4 hard cooked eggs, chopped Boil potatoes until soft (30-35 min.) Cool slightly and cut into cubes. Mix mayo, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper in large glass or plastic bowl. Add potatoes, celery and onion, toss. Stir in eggs. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours. **Taco Salad 1 head lettuce, shredded 1 lb. hamburger, cook & drain 8 oz. Shredded cheddar cheese 1 can Kidney Beans 4 tomatoes, diced 1/3 c. sugar Taco Flavored Chips (Doritos) Taco Seasoning (1 pkg.) 8 oz. bottle Thousand Island Dressing 1 tbsp Taco Sauce Brown hamburger, add taco seasoning (saving 1 tbsp.) Layer lettuce, Kidney Beans, Hamburger, Cheese, Tomatoes, and end with chips on top. Mix Thousand Island Dressing, 1/3. cup sugar, 1 tbsp taco seasoning, and one tbsp taco sauce. Add this mixture RIGHT before serving and toss to coat. **Easy Chocolate Dessert 1 c. flour 1/2. c chopped pecans 1/2 c. melted butter 1 8 oz. softened cream cheese 1 c. powdered sugar 1 9 oz. carton Cool Whip 2 pkg. intant choc. pudding 3 c. milk 1/2 tsp. vanilla Crust: Blend flour, nuts, melted butter. Pat in 9 x 13" pan. Bake 15 min. at 350 degrees First Layer: Beat the cream cheese. Add the powdered sugar in one cup of the Cool Whip. Spread on cooled crust. Second Layer: Combine pudding , milk, and vanilla. Beat well and spread over first layer. Third Layer: Spread the remaining Cool Whip over the 2nd layer. I like to sprinkle crushed Heath or Skor bars on top. **Never Fail Pie Crust 3 c. flour 1 1/4 c. shortening(crisco) 1 egg white, unbeaten 5 tbsp. cold water 1 tsp vinegar 1 tsp salt Sift flour and salt. Use fork or pastry fork to mix or cut in shortening. Mix egg white, water and vinegar in a cup, with a fork. Add to flour mixture. **All American Apple Pie 1 c. sugar 2 tbsp. flour 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp lemon juice 5 c apple slices or cubes 2 tbsp butter Combine sugar, flour, spices, salt and lemon juice. Add apples, toss to mix. Put into pie crust and cover. Bake in oven (350) until done. **Death by Chocolate 1 dark chocolate cake mix 16 oz. Cool Whip 4 c. chocolate pudding 6 Heath or Skor bars, crumbled Bake chocolate cake mix as directed and cool completely. Crumble 1/4 of cake in a large bowl. Dollop 1/4 of Cool Whip on top. Dollop 1 c. of the chocolate pudding next, and 1/4 of the crumbled candy bars last. Repeat layers. Keep refrigerated. All I can say is, mmmmmmm!!! Ok, I better stop for now. Well! Someone at SOME Store I went to yesterday backed into my van and put a HUGE dent in the passenger corner of the bumper. I didn't even notice it til today either is what really stinks! The nerve of some people!! I could never smack up someone's car like that and just.. leave! grrrrrrrrrrr Then.. today was the day we'd decided to move stuff out from my storage unit to take over to my mom's shed. Took the 2 back seats out last night so we'd be ready first thing this morning, checked the weather.. NO rain.. key phrase here... woke up to find it had rained what seems like most of the night and the seats which were on my driveway were SOAKED... it finally stops and we decide to head over to the unit. Get 1/2 way thru pulling the larger items which were of course in front of all the boxes.. and it starts to rain again. We just worked as fast as we could, got my van loaded up, furniture moved back into the unit and I went to close the back door of the van which was keeping us dry and yes.. lo and behold the door is filled w/ water which cascades over my head and all the way down into my shoes like a lovely god-given waterfall. AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Needless to say it rained off and on all day and we finally got everything moved. So that's a nice big scratch off the to-do list! ALSO, I got a box today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From Pat !! :D I love the goodies Pat, I only had a few ceramic pumpkins for decor and these items are just perfect for Halloween! She sent me an adorable black cat riding on a wagon.. so cute! A bag of bulbs of Daffodils 'White Cheerfulness' .. worked on me this eve and cheered me right up! hehe A bag of Allium Purple Sensation.. YAY!! (2) lovely Bath & Body Works scented lotions - Peony and Cotton Blossom. I love these!!!!!!!! A very nice book on garden design and a sweet note about designing a garden to make the space my own when we move to my mom's house.. :) ty The item I loved best tho was the Spell book .. omg it is so adorable!! It looks just like an ancient book of spells, it reads "Spells, Potions and Creepy Concoctions" on the front. You open the 'book' and it's actually a hollowed out book that you put candy in for Halloween! It was filled w/ goodies and each time you open it, it cackles and says in a witch's voice Yummy! or Trick or Treat with a longggggggg cackle, or Ohhh you look so scaryyyyyyyyyyyyy cackle cackle cackle.. it is just so darn cute and it cracked me up! The inside of the lid says "Away with bean and broccoli spear! Banish carrot sticks from here! Shun the dull and humdrum treats. Keep this vessel filled with SWEETS!" Thankyou so much Pat! Another Favorite place is at the beach and Texas has several beautiful beaches.

My most Special Bloom is this one, a present from a bird.

One of mine and Fox's favorite places to hang out in the Fall is beside my pond with floating candles in the pond. Very relaxing.

Your lotus is beautiful. It almost doesn't look like it is real. I have never had any. Are they easy to grow?

Yes, they are very easy to grow. The bloom is exquisite, I was so proud of it when it bloomed. I made my mom come over and look at it...lol. They are big and beautiful. I was so happy when it bloomed for me.
I almost killed it though so I haven't seen it bloom since, but maybe it will be big enough again next year it will bloom again.

Vic, that 1st pic is a MUST!! The best of the best of what our group reflects! I'll be glad when I can get a pic of Kenzie out in the garden. Julie borrowed my camera but I do have some Mexican Sage that is blooming beautifully and an iris that has a beautiful bud on it so hopefully I can get pics this weekend.

Tracy, I would really love this pic/graphic in the cookbook. Its not my own but I just love it. If it needs to be larger, I think I have another one that is bigger, somewhere! My photobucket is rediculious!

I think for my 'other' one I want to find one from my other home, the area, I mean. I'm thinking on it:)

Theresa, Jenell & Susie (I think we've already added receipes from Sue) if you want to add any receipes please feel free if you have time, if not we understand:) But we do need it done very soon. We'd love to have them!

Hey Pixie girl! I gotcha down for 3 books! Love those pictures sweetie!

Shirley, the Botanical Gardens are beautiful! What a gorgeous place to visit. What state are you in? I'd like to add that to the captions. I am pretty good at remembering these things most times but now it escapes me. :o(

Vic, I love the picture of Zack with your hibiscus bloom! He is so sweet. I want to take him home with me. :o)

Sassy, I am here. I got swamped last week with the catering job for Saturday, the client made a huge adjustment to the guest count so I had to do my shopping twice and double the cooking at the last minute. I was exhausted after the party was over. Whew, now I am back! I love that pic of the little boy!

Fran, your lotus is fantastic. Your pictures are stunning! I am going to have to try some of those next summer. I want to sigh just looking at it.

Tracy, I just found out that Jamie's work will be coming to a halt in 1 to 2 weeks, so I've decided not to send a book to the girls back home : ( I've got to save for Christmas, and of course bills too. I updated the list for you, and like the other girls said, I am not worried about getting mine for Christmas either.

Just wanted to say thank you on the comments about by Angel Wings Lotus. It was very pretty. I was so proud of it.

Vic, thanks for letting us know. I appreciate you doing the update! You're a peach. I hope Jamie's work picks up quick. I know how the cold months put a damper on the wallet. Our season is winding down here too. Hubby is spending more time at home. The weather is in the 20's, the snow is on the ground. Time for his vacation. :o)

checking on the status of this and suggesting you take money from people. i would hate to see you get stuck and i know no one would deliberately do that but things happen in life so give us a ballpark cost and ask people to send. if it is more we can then send the difference and if it is less you can include the difference when you ship the books. Doesn't that sound good?

Hello Ladies,

I just wanted to stop by and see if this forum was still around. I am so happy all of you kept it going. Looks like you are all having a great time.

I also wanted to apologize for disappearing off the face of the earth. Medical issues had to take the front seat and at the same time my poor OLD computer died. Have a borrowed one for now.

I have really missed all of you, Sorry I did not know how to get in touch with one of you to let you know what happened.

I will be getting rid of most of my plants and daylilies over the next year as I can no longer take care of the huge gardens I have. I am going to be drastically downsizing. If anyone is interested just email me and I will give you further details.

I sure have missed all of you. I already said that didn't I?

For those of you that are also on the Traveling Daylilies please pass the message on my downsizing on to them and let them know I have really missed them as well.

Deni-Hello so glad to see your post. I always think of you when I see daylilies, irises, lilies and other plants from your garden blooming in my garden. Hope Bettie and Megan are doing well along with the rest of your family. Medical issues can sure take a front seat in our lives. I understand completely. UPDATE!!!!

To everyone that has ordered cookbooks, I spoke with Tracy last night, she thought there had been a post put on here letting everyone know that the books will not be ready till after the Holidays. She has been way too busy to get it all done and is sorry for anyone that did not know this.

I just wanted to let you all know that there will still be one made, just not as soon as she had hoped to get it out : (

Thanks for posting, Vicky. I've been in touch with Tracy. I don't blame her for not trying to do all that work on the cookbook while trying to get ready for Christmas. However, I have cancelled my order (3 books) because they were going to be Chrismtas presents. Thanks for all the recipe sharing. When I get a chance I will try some of the recipes that were posted.

I sure wouldn't mind purchasing 4 instead of 3 if there's going to be some extras. I'd LOVE to get a jump start on Christmas gifts for 09! :)
I just have to make a note for myself where to find them come next Dec. And hope I remember where the note is!

Hi everyone! I have been among the missing for months but all is well. Very well really. I'll post details later but saw this thread and wondered if I could order a book ( or perhaps books) at this late date.

I was just thinking of you the other day when I was looking through one of the cook books I got from you. I finally found the long hunted for "potato chip cookie" recipe! Woo Hoo! I knew a lady years ago that made these and I loved them! She has since passed and I could never find a recipe! Thank You!

How many books would you like? The order has not went in yet. I will try to keep this up to date for Tracy.
