mosquitos in water?
Comments (23)just in damp leaves! She wants me to get rid of all the leaves that do not dry out completly between waterings. It is sort of absurd as the yards all around us are full of leaves (among other things.) I have a big tub in the front with two goldfish in it; we had trouble keeping them happy until I dumped a HUGE amount of water weeds in there. Now we can't see them but they eat a lot of the weeds and are happy, and no mosquito larva in it. I got it for the frogs to breed in but I think they may be eating the tree frog larvae. It seems perfectly balenced; anyway if you scoop up the water and sniff it smells fine. It looks good, although it is absolutly full of weeds. No algae, either. Now if I could just get rid of the adult mosquitos (which are getting into the house even!) all would be well.......See MoreMosquito Dunks: OK for Frog/Toad Larvae?
Comments (34)Considering frogs and toads very much like mosquitos and mosquito larvae as a food source, what most likely happened in Kathy Durrum's situtaion is that by introducing mosquito dunks and killing the larvae they removed the food source for the frogs which caused a large number of them to starve to death. Removing the dunks allowed the mosquito population to proliferate which then also allowed the predators of mosquitos, frogs and toads, to also proliferate. Any time you remove or reduce the amount of an animal from an environment that is a small ecosystem you're doing damage to that entire system, not just the one specific animal in it....See MoreMosquitoes, mosquitoes, mosquitoes
Comments (7)Ah, bullrush! Thanks! Last year we had the worst infestation of gnats in the house. It was horrible! We tried all sorts of sprays, fly papers, pouring bleach down the drain, getting rid of all produce unless refrigerated, blah. Finally, I got some small decorateve jam jars (from the canning section at Walmart) and put in a bit of apple cider vinegar. I popped a few small holes into the lids and set them about the house. The gnats would climb into the holes to get the vinegar and get trapped in there and drown. After a week, they were down by half. After 2 weeks, not a single live gnat could be found. :-D...See MoreStoring rain water and mosquito larvae
