Best way to remove vinca under tree?
Comments (4)Fatso, I was hoping someone would come up with a magical cure. I have a similar problem, except it is pachysandra growing underneath blueberry bushes. The blueberries are getting choked out-they are not producing like they used to. I tried yanking the pachies, but they are tenacious! I tried putting newspaper down, but I can't even tell where I put it! Anyone have any ideas?...See MoreBest way to clear out a neglected wooded area?
Comments (4)Thanks for the reply. I neglected to mention that the ground right now is a lumpy mess of pine needles and cones from all the fir trees (which I don't mind) covering all sorts of debris that has been tossed back there over the decades. My husband and the previous owners used the wooded area as a place to toss old christmas trees or grass clippings, dead shrubs, you get the picture... It's also lumpy from clumps of clay that were dug up from other areas of our property and dumped back there. In my clearing, I've discovered a pair of pants, leftover lumber from the construstruction of our subdivision, dozens of beer bottles and cans, several cinder blocks, plastic tubing that went on for yards and yards (finally threw that in the trash!)... I guess that's more of what I was looking for in help with clearing out the area. It would be so nice to have a natural looking yard without the fear of tripping over an invisible stump or getting caught on a prickly vine. All of the fallen trees will remain along with as much of the pine needles and leaves. I'm just flustered over the number of invasive weeds that require constant spraying to keep down. Sorry for the awfully long posts....See MoreBest way to clear out area to prep for St augustine grass
Comments (3)When you kill the existing plants down and rake them away, you will notice the soil is not level. That is the time to level it. Do not use a rototiller to level. Use tools that will only scrape the surface. the idea is to move the high spots into the low spots and then see what you have. If the low spots are still low, you can raise them with sand or pulverized (no clods) topsoil. Even 1/4-inch clods will ruin your leveling job, so sand works better, usually. Search this forum for topics about leveling bermuda. Those will give you the general idea about the process. St Augustine, when mowed at the highest setting, is aggressive enough to choke out almost all grassy plants, but it does not do well against broadleaf weeds like clover, oxalis, horse herb, dichondra, and other "dollar weed" type plants. I would not do anything special unless and until you get the weeds, though....See Morebest way to clear old soil of root material?
Comments (7)I agree with the backhoe idea, except that I would only drag the bucket thru the soil to the depth of the diggers and leave everything. The roots will come up to the top. I'd also pull any stumps before returning the rental machine. What to do with the exposed roots depends on how big and how many. Pushing them into a big pile makes a mess which can be overwhelming but then you'd be able to use the machine to smooth out the soil. There's a small backhoe called a Teramite t5c that I've rented locally rather inexpensively....See Morejohn_mo
