have any of ya'll started balloon flowers from the trimmings? cut mine back and was wundering about it. thanks,joyce

Most plants can be started from cuttings, but I guess no one who is reading the forum right now has any specific information on how to root balloon flower, but I found the following on the Plant Propagation Forum.

Only thing is it might be too hot right now to get them to root unless you have a mist system. Cuttings lose moisture and deteriorate very quickly in this heat.

I just came in for a break from digging up balloon flowers that are literally everywhere! I did not realize they had a tap root so I did a search. I am giving these to my sister and niece. I hear there is some recovery time needed. So instead of just dumping them into a bag and dragging them over to my sister's, it looks like I am going to have to pot them up. Holy Cow! Some of the roots are as big as an ear of corn. In addition to spreading by seed, it is looking like they are also stoloniferous (sp?). I bought two plants 5 years ago and now I have at least 3 dozen huge clumps. They appear to be invasive in my yard!

Shelley, I have been giving your question some thought and poked around the web a bit but I have come up blank. The only far stretch thought I have is perhaps the lack of color on one plant is due to root disturbance from voles? Or maybe as this perennial is getting somewhat older this is just one of those first signs of old age, sort of like all of the wrinkles that have been showing up on my face. I am curious what others might think. kt

Looks like it very well could be a balloon flower. I suspect it is because it is being grown inside under artificial lights that it looks slightly off from a mature plant's leaves. But don't take my comment as a definitive yes. Rodney

Platycodon (Balloon Flower)

Have planted and maintained a lot of balloon flowers, primarily those of the Fuji and Hakone Series (initially due to availability). I especially like Hakone Platycodon which are doubles. Over years, my experience has been the same as David Tomlinson (Merlin's Hollow); namely that although balloon flowers tend to be longer-lived than many typical garden perennials (they can be notably long-lived), the blue- and white-flowered ones tend to outlive the pink. Below 'Hakone White' in our garden today. I have never grown balloon flowers from seed and tend to deadhead the seed pods for appearance sake. I find that these taller balloon flowers work well within mixed perennial beds, but they grow towards the sunlight and therefore may need a minimal staking to direct stems upwards.

You might want to cover them with clear plastic to keep the moisture in. Also trim back the leaves to just a couple. They loose moisture through the leaves. Good luck. Let us know.

I've only started them from seed, but cuttings are worth a try. If you cover them with a clear plastic cover, I hope they are either in complete shade or indoors or they'll be fried in no time. :-(

Oh thanks for the idea. I only have one and really love love it. I put some shade cloth on the greenhouse and have a water garden in there to help with humidity so maybe I can root some in there.
