Marcia, thanks again for the use of your yard. It was great! Wish we all could have chatted more but we all seemed interested in your methods of gardening in the wild ,as opposed to gardening in the raw :) One more hard lemonade and who knows...

Chatting and touring together provides a much steeper learning curve, and new plants is a nice bonus!

Did everyone's heart sink Sat night when the rain came on the eve of planting day?

Luckily it was dry enough Sunday afternoon to get it in.

Nad, mugwort looks scary. Kind of like the way Jennie fears the obedient plant. Invasive?

You guys were great, I'm very glad I met you and look forward to future swaps and chats. Must do it again. When??

I second the thanks for Marcia's lovely plant swap. I came away with lots of ideas to try, as well as plants!
It was great meeting everyone. Looking forward to the next time.

DLL--- mugwort can be invasive. I would plant it in an area where you can have large plants, not a small vignette for delicate plants. It doesn't take off like mint, but it does enjoy growing. :)

Also, wanted to let you all know how much my friend enjoyed your rocks, canna and yucca. SB

Hi All:

Thanks again for all the plants everyone! I loved learning about Marcia's garden and her experiments. As a new gardner it was great to see all the possibilities. Haven't gotten a thing in the ground yet, but have plans to work on it this week. I hope to get a the huge variety of mints into their containers tonight.

Let's go with a 2 p.m. start then, and say all the plant swapping will be done by 4 p.m., so that people don't dawdle too much in arriving. However, you are all welcome to hang around as long as you want and eat and chat and so on. I am looking to swap FOR interesting looking hostas, so that is great to hear. I started a shade garden last year. By May 19th one should be able to just look at them and know enough re: color, variegation, leaf size, whatever. I am planning to get some photos printed of some of my things in flower since I have another purpose for that as well, but I think just a writen description like "Tall blue/purple iris, likes sun" is adequate. We don't need scientific or variety names, although they would help, so certainly list that if you know it! I too have plants to share that I don't know the real name of. I should mention again for the person looking for landscaping rocks that I have long heaps of them. So anybody who wants colorful rocks (described in an early posting in this thread) bring some containers to carry them home in. I have a LOT of them, enough for many people. I will serve pickled peppers and caulflower which we just canned that are excellent, also something else more main dishy, don't know what yet. I can make some ice, so whatever beverages people want to bring can go on ice. I have lots of soda, but no diet soda (Just say no to drugs, LOL) so bring diet beverages if that is what you want. Water is my diet beverage of choice, and I have a big water container for those of you who aren't so high class that you need bottled water. We have well water and I love it, also Milwaukee city water in 2 liter bottles for my city-boy husband. This is WI so beer is okay, too. :-) I have lots of glasses, silverware, napkins, that sort of thing. START INVITING PEOPLE! Marcia

Ah, just finally picked 2 p.m. as the time before I saw the last post. I have invited others through the local Milwaukee freecycle chat group and sounds like a few of them will be participating, too. 1115 43rd St. zip 53108. Â Thinking of the freeway, we are 1 mile west of I-94 between 7 Mile Rd. and Hwy G, near the top of Racine County. Basic directions: take I-94 to 7 Mile Rd., go one mile west (past the 7 Mile Fair) and turn left (south) onto 43rd St. Â We are the second house on the right, in all the trees. Â Home phone: 262-835-2393 in case you get lost or have questions. :-) Plants can be in pots or just boxes or bags, but should have some kind of name tag, on a piece of paper or popsicle stick or whatever, so that you know what you are bringing home. Â Can be flowering plants, vegetables, bushes, groundcover, baby trees, seeds, whatever you have to share. I am going to dig up some things ahead of time, but since it is at my house, I will dig up some things as requested, so wouldn't hurt to bring along a box or something to put plants in. Thanks Julie, That's not far from us, I didn't know they sold to the public - some of their peonies fields are about four miles from here. I'll go over to Avalon this next week, We have had record rainfall, we farm and fields are flooded.But our house and buildings are not flooded, and we are all safe, so we are lucky. The Dells area and so many areas are suffering - some by their own bad judgement,but none the less, suffering - that we have to feel blessed here. Clustered Bellflowers and Coreopsis started blooming today, got a few weeds pulled, and 3 ice cream pails of strawberries picked, before the storms hit again - so not such a bad day! Luke & Shari, your wonderful, fun swap package arrived here a few days ago! I know,...I should actually have posted long before now, and please forgive me, but we've had kind of lot on our plate lately. - So, anyway, WOW! What a great bunch of seeds! "Isodon excisus"? Whoa! Apparently it's a Chinese medicinal herb with pretty little flowers that can also produce frozen ice ribbons which also look like flowers. There are also indications of anti-carcinogenic properties. Gonna be further researching this puppy for a while. Then there's "Edible Chrysanthemum". Shungiku? Sounds like fun! Oh, and all the other totally fab-splendid seeds...! Mammoth Sunflower sized thanks to all who so generously participated! GardenWeb totally rocks the Houzz!! :)

I really wish I could have gone. I had off last week just for my gardening. But the weather was just junk most of the week. I can't remember having such a bad week. If it wasn't cold, then the ground was too wet from rain. Hubby and I went to Milaeger's and Wayne's Daughters on Wednesday. Guess what?? T-storms that afternoon. Luckily both places have lots of greenhouses so I was happy just staying inside of them. Saturday was the 1st good day that the temps were nice and the soil was dry enough to do some planting. I still have things to plant yet. I'm really hoping this coming weekend I'll be able to get everything done. I've gone to plant swaps before and I've always had a great time. It's so nice being able to put a name to a face. I'll do my best to make any more plant swaps in this area.

Hey Kat, Did you go to the Wayne's Daughter's new store in Racine, or did you go to their original location just west of I-94? Because that is just down my street 1.5 miles! If you get to my neignborhood, feel free to come by for colorful rocks.

It was great meeting other gardeners and getting new plants. I especially look forward to discovering what my mystery plants are. Sandibluffs, you left me a bag of little plants that look vaguely like parsley, what were those? The label fell off. I got several unidentified plants from daddylonglegs, and the one he was ready to throw out is something my tenant has growing in a cluster in the yard, so hopefully it is something nice. I have managed to plant almost everything from the swap, plus many of my vegies. I have really expanded my shade garden with lots of hosta.

Generally spring and fall are good transplanting times, so maybe we could do another one in the fall? I would be glad to host another plant swap at my conveniently located jungle. You could find out how the plants in banana boxes work out. I planted several tomato plants in them this week, and the yellow raspberries are doing well so far.

I missed this one, too. Had tooooo many things going on this weekend, including a trip out of town.

Marcia, I went to the Wayne's Daughters in Racine on hwy 32. I have gone to the other one by you, but this one in Racine is great. Now I just have to get outside and plant everything. :)
A Fall swap would be a good time for me too.

Has anyone been to the Perenial farm in Burlington/Lyons area? I went a few weeks ago and it is great.
