Free large white dahlias at SE WI plant swap!

Hi, as an incentive to participate, a generous anonymous donor (okay, my father-in-law) has sent boxes of white dahlias. The flowers are supposedly "the size of a large plate." Everybody who comes can have at least one, and they are clusters that can be divided further.

You are really tempting me. I could bring lot's of trading goodies but my plan is to weed and mulch instead. My garden is untilled and full of weeds with just an itty bit of lettuce and a small small patch of snow peas planted around a tomato cage. The trades I received would probably die before I got around to planting.

But I will pine over the white dahlias. I grew a few dinner plate size dahlia's once.

Have fun. Maybe next year for me. Diane

Hey, my garden is also full of weeds. Haven't had time to get to most of them. If people are expecting to see a tidy garden, they are coming to the wrong place. I never even got any peas planted. At least the many lilacs and honeysuckle and lilies of the valley are blooming now, so it smells great. (Unless you stand by the compost, which is too wet from all the rain.)

How far away from me are you? I am sure there will be lots of dahlias left over. I have 4 boxes of varying sizes plus one bag. Maybe I could make each person weed for 5 minutes to get their free dahlias. :-)

Wow, JC, I want an Ursula....seed! Don't know if I have anything rare or weird you want, but..you can dig up what ever you want. I was just re-reading the posts to get a head count/names, somehow I spaced Fawnridge was the one bringing the pulled pork..soo.. he can't come..are burgers and hotdogs okay with everyone? DH will be on a Harley poker run thing, so burgers and dogs will be easy for me and feed the masses. If you are vegetarian, please bring your own Bocaburgers or soy dogs, if you don't like boigers or dogs, bring your favorite lunch. I have a large boat cooler for ice,it'll be full of bottled water. If anyone wants sodas or iced tea, please speak up about that too, and I'll add some to the cooler. As far as where everyone will put their plants....hmmm..I guess we'll play it by ear! Let's go with a 2 p.m. start then, and say all the plant swapping will be done by 4 p.m., so that people don't dawdle too much in arriving. However, you are all welcome to hang around as long as you want and eat and chat and so on. I am looking to swap FOR interesting looking hostas, so that is great to hear. I started a shade garden last year. By May 19th one should be able to just look at them and know enough re: color, variegation, leaf size, whatever. I am planning to get some photos printed of some of my things in flower since I have another purpose for that as well, but I think just a writen description like "Tall blue/purple iris, likes sun" is adequate. We don't need scientific or variety names, although they would help, so certainly list that if you know it! I too have plants to share that I don't know the real name of. I should mention again for the person looking for landscaping rocks that I have long heaps of them. So anybody who wants colorful rocks (described in an early posting in this thread) bring some containers to carry them home in. I have a LOT of them, enough for many people. I will serve pickled peppers and caulflower which we just canned that are excellent, also something else more main dishy, don't know what yet. I can make some ice, so whatever beverages people want to bring can go on ice. I have lots of soda, but no diet soda (Just say no to drugs, LOL) so bring diet beverages if that is what you want. Water is my diet beverage of choice, and I have a big water container for those of you who aren't so high class that you need bottled water. We have well water and I love it, also Milwaukee city water in 2 liter bottles for my city-boy husband. This is WI so beer is okay, too. :-) I have lots of glasses, silverware, napkins, that sort of thing. START INVITING PEOPLE! Marcia

Did anyone bring rue, Ruta graveolens? That looks like another possibility. If you put on disposable gloves or something else to keep the sap off your hands, you can test it. Crush a few leaves, and if it is rue, you will notice a strong, unpleasant smell. The hand protection is necessary because the sap of rue leaves could cause a rash. Your plant also looks like Corydalis lutea, but for me the seedlings bloom the first year wherever they pop up.

Hi Wormy,

Sorry, it was May 20th (yesterday.) Details were posted on another thread on this forum. We had 6 swappers there, and another one in absentia (who sent the dahlias, and I got him some hosta and irises.) We had excellent weather, and a good time was had by all. A couple of us had a drink, and hubby said to say that daddylonglegs took off some of his clothing (he didn't), just to make it seem more exciting, but actually it was me who was naked when the first two swappers arrived. (Okay, I was in the shower, they were 5 minutes early.)

We had a tour of my 5 acre jungle/yard. It worked well for me as I could dig things up on demand, although I already had about 30 plants in pots. Sandibluffs was the most organized person there, and had a lot of different plants, so I recommend you go to her plant swap next Saturday. Someone local I had invited came with one or two plants and a peach cobbler, so I swapped her plants for the cobbler. :-) All in all it went very well. I would be glad to host another one sometime.

For anyone who lives nearby, I still have plenty of dahlias and plants everywhere that I could dig up.

I have been reading up on what to do with the tubers. Do you start them in some peat. How do you think they would do in a bed on the south side of a little garden shed. Would that be to hot for them? It would be in the sun all day. These tubers are the first plants that I have received in the mail-what a very pleasant treat!
