Where to buy tomato and pepper plants in Dallas

Hi! Does anyone know where one can buy tomato and pepper plants this time of year in North Dallas area? I'm starting to think about making a Fall veggie garden. Thanks!

That's a good question, I would like to know, too. I'm wondering if Strong's in Carrollton or Northaven Gardens might carry them. Worth a try to find out.

I think if you check North Haven Gardens web site they either have them or wil have them soon. They are extremely vegetable gardening oriented and (gasp) actually order varieties that work in our climae.

I don't know if you have a chance to visit the herb fair in Toronto this weekend but I note the list of vendors include seeds of diversity and yet another vendor selling organic and heritage vegetables. Amen, John! I just told a fairly-new-to-gardening friend of mine the same thing today! In the past 10 yrs i've drifted away form the april 15 date and have been happier for my results. I plan to start my seeds this week. Black cheery is one of my faves, too and i'll be starting if from seed i got from pinetree. Lots of places carry the seed, though.

What can I plant in my old tomato and pepper trough?

You could add some fresh compost to the trough and, if you eat it, grow some mesclun varieties for salads. And peas for shoots and pods. Again, if you eat them, perhaps some chard seedlings - either plain or with the coloured stems. Montia perfoliata/winter purslane is another possible. With your temperatures still high and your ground warm - putting in some baby carrots could be an option. They'll stay in the ground over winter and won't be bothered by frosts. In spring, refresh your trough with about an inch of new compost if you are planting into a soil-based medium and you have worms working in the trough. (They'll be busy and visible in early spring.) For old potting mix - it often loses its structure over winter so a deeper replacement might be needed.

Hi Susan, I've been doing great. How 'bout you? I don't get on Garden Web like I used to, and I have missed all of you! We moved three years ago and I left behind all of my flowerbeds and gardens that I'd spent 20 years building up. The new place had no gardens, only the few I have put in since I moved here. I'm too old to build new beds like I did in my 20's and 30's. :) So no, can you believe I do not have a single banana plant (still have a few aroids, though)! Hard to believe, huh? I gave the bananas I had left to my daughter who is newly married, and I'm trying to turn her into a gardener too. She isn't totally sold but I can remember when I was her age, and my MIL forced plants that I didn't want onto me. I never dreamed what a monster she would create in me by forcing those cannas and a box of Breck's bulbs on me. :) I hope to do the same with my DD. I thought about going ahead and starting the Sungold seeds for our veggie garden, but I want to get them in early in Walls of Water. Last year we were late getting our tomatoes out and it got hot before they produced many, and we didn't get much of a crop. I may start a few of my heirloom tomato seeds and hope they'll get some size on them before mid April. Thanks for the idea. I love Winter Sowing and when I start them in my greenhouse in WS containters, they really get a jump start. Great to hear from you! Dawna

North Haven Gardens typically has them when it's time to plant them, although they may not always have exactly the variety you want. That said, I didn't think we started the fall garden until closer to August?

Looking at the North Haven website, it looks like they will get them in starting this Friday! Thanks all for the replies.

As far as when to plant, I've read anywhere from mid-June to early August. It seems like it if you can get the plants to survive and thrive through the dead of summer, it might give you a leg up on the Fall harvest. At least that's my novice assessment of what I've read. I think getting them to produce much in the extreme heat is unlikely. Anyone disagree with this assessment?

I bought my peppers and tomatoes from the local home depot and lowes - Bonnie plant brand.

As far as heat, yes it's a problem. Last year we had that terrible heat wave, I barely kept my plants alive through it. Once the heat broke, I got lots of production, except the hard frost killed everything just before they were ripe. Had literally hundreds of orange/almost red cherry tomatoes fall on the ground to rot. Bad luck, is all.

I'd recommend planting now, so they reach maturity by the time the cooler weather rolls in, and get the fruit set ASAP.

Next time, before we have a really hard frost, go ahead and pick all of the tomatoes on the plants and bring them inside. All of the ones that are barely pink will ripen and most of the green ones will, too.
