Growing Tomatoes

An odd question

We somehow miscounted this year and ended up with one more plant than stakes, so I rummaged through the barn and found an old rusty pitchfork that I pounded into the ground to hold the plant up until I could get something better. Now, I know it could just be because of the variety (Mortgage Lifter), but that particular plant is bigger, stronger and has way higher production than any other plant out there this year, so I'm just wondering if there is something in that old rusty metal that might be helping feed the roots?

Hmmm...iron? LOL I don't know. That was my stab in the dark.
I know Tomatoes need and love calcium (egg shells rock for this purpose)...Don't know if they love rusty garden tools. LOL Could be somethin to it... or could be just the variety, as you said. I've never grown Mortgage Lifter (doing Cherokee Purple and Pruden's Purple this year) - but I've heard they are hearty and veracious producers. I've also heard they tolerate the heat well. Maybe they're diggin this heat wave?

The Earth gives us mysteries every day, especially to us gardeners. It draws out honest questions and wannabe truthful responses from us little people. It is beautiful if you look at it at the right angle. I would guess it has nothing to do with the support, and everything to do with that one particular plant.

However, if I had a group of friends show up at one time, I would kid around and make up some elaborate story of how the pitchfork was intentional and the whole thing was a planned horticulture-knowledge experiment created by you.

Haha.

My reply vanished in the android pad attempt to post..... But years ago mom and I planned to paint the bathroom. The vintage beadboard in white and the walls in a pale golden tone. Dad said "Pink! They use pink on the walls in institutions to calm the troubled minds" So I bought him the paint chip samples to pick his pink.....and boy did he pick a pink! Pepto Bismal. The white was banished as too hard to clean and was painted that horrible pink. He saw it and said it was too pink and let me paint the upper half and ceiling a very pale (in comparison) shade of pink. But all these years later that pink bathroom still glows. I do not want to use that shade of pink! And yes the bathroom is on the list of things to update. I looked at some paint chip samples at HD and think I will use the one I linked. I like the darker shades and figure using the lighter one will end up looking much darker. I wonder if I should "be-jewel" the tool peg board :) Here is a link that might be useful: Maybe?

Faux stone for sure. I recommend casting the pieces in white concrete over metal lathe. White allows brighter color when a coloring agent is used. Color the concrete and press wrinkled foil into the surface as it sets up. I've seen amazingly realistic results using this technique. I would experiment with the color to mimic the look of the natural stone used in the real stonehenge. Wooden blocks with slots and tabs could be attached to the lathe at the tops of the pillars and to both ends of the bridge pieces and left un-concreted. That way you could do a test fit of the entire mock-up, and make any adjustments to the alignment, before commiting the pieces to concrete. The key to this project is that it acheives the same alignment with the sun during the summer and winter solstices as Stone Henge. Or, if you want a unique interpretation of the original, you could make the components in the shape of giant bones and call it "Bone-Henge". Just a thought.

Shelf paper ... odd question

I know they're not NEEDED, but I like shelf paper. To borrow your word, I like that it's slightly "grippy" and that it makes the shelf infinitesimally softer. I like the look of a bright, pretty paper. I like that if something is spilled, it's easy to pick up the paper and clean it. I'm not debating whether I am going to install it; rather, I'm trying to figure out HOW to do it. The newspaper template idea is great, and so common-sense that I ask myself, Why didn't you think of that? Thanks!

An odd question for those who have sown sweet violet from seed

So it looks like take them back OUT of the fridge, keep them inside, see if they come up, and if not in a month, THEN stick them into the fridge and after that, the garage. It doesn't look like they need light to germinate, so I must not have to put them on the sill for it. Thanks! The instructions I received were worded very vaguely. Out of the refrigerator and into the house for a month.
