My Little Woodland Rose Garden

Hi everyone.

I'm new to this forum but I've been doing some planting in my wooded garden area, so I thought I'd pay you guys a visit.

I made a small rose garden area around my birdbath using roses that require less sun and I thought I'd share the picture with you guys. Thanks for looking and have a great day.

Just in front of the grassy area is a big tree so it only gets about 4 hours of full sun. I was so pleased with the results that I made a huge woodland gardens in the back of my lot. It's about 35 by 40 and coming along nicely. The roses are knockout roses.

Thanks, everyone. I love looking at it too. But you can't roll around in it Susan, because that is a very VERY rocky hillside. It's close to the house, but we can't mow it, and I won't weedeat it (or allow DH to) until this stuff dies down. Then in the fall the whole area is covered with wild mistflower. So it is beautiful and fragrant then too.

Thank You Gonativegal and Flowerkitty for your comments. My woodland garden is in Woodhaven lakes about 120 miles west of downtown Chicago in a little town called Sublette. My Urban Garden is in downtown Chicago on the South Side at 26th and State where I maintain the grounds of the oldest chartered hospital in the City of Chicago. I live in Crest Hill which is almost dead center between the two. It really is a lot of work to build a garden like the Woodland Garden and it really never stops there is always a new project list but once I hit the gate to the Woodland Garden on the weekends it is like stepping into paradise and the whole weeks worries and problems disapear for a couple of days. When you wake up on Saturday Morning and go sit on the deck with your cup of coffee it is so peaceful and quiet. The deer run down a path behind the property that backs up to a cornfield. Of course the squirels love playing in the trees but the biggest treat is the songbirds coming to greet you. Here is a view of Our Place out in The Woodland Garden As you can see from this original photo of the trailer when we got the property the grounds were not the only thing we changed. I will be posting new pictures from time to time as we continue to improve and change the woodland gardens.

Can I mow my woodland garden?

I wouldn't recommend mowing particularly for the reasons given above that the nice stuff still needs to feed it's seeds and bulbs in order to produce for you next year. My property sounds similar to yours in a way that ours is in an old farm woodlot but inside the city. I'm near the edge of the woodlot so you can actually see through to the other side but we are working on building up the lower and mid sections of the woods to provide more privacy. I'm not sure how big 1/2 acre is but it's surely much bigger than what we have. Here is a picture: When we moved here our woods was a MESS, full of trees felled by the builder, garbage from the city, garbage from the old farm etc. We had 2 major invasive alien plants 1) Oriental Bittersweet carpeting in a woven mat throughout our property and 2)Garlic Mustard by the thousands maybe even tens of thousands. It took us most of the year and a half we've lived here and almost all our free time to remove those two alien invasives but now that it's done we are soooo proud of ourselves. We took it all out by hand on hands and knees and now we are only dealing with the odd seedling that managed to sneak by us. Of course with both in the woods and on the properties/lots to either side and behind us, we will always have to watch out for it but at least the worst of it is gone now. We also had poison ivy but we totally lucked out that not ONE plant was growing on our property and the only one we've ever found had made it's way under our privacy fence from the neighbor's house (they didn't know what it looked like). The next thing we did after removing all the alien stuff was to put paths. Paths are great. It keeps people from trampling the "good stuff" and adds a bit of "fun" and "whimsy" to your back yard to have a miniature walking trail right outside your door. Our paths are also just plain dirt. We thought of putting mulch but we don't need it because our soil is clay and sand so no water stays at the surface to make "muck"...it's always dry. We put in a fire pit (legal in this city) and made some sitting areas and a spot to hang a hammock with special flowers and woodland shrubs nearby for interest. We've since added a TON of native woodland plants, ferns, shrubs and trees which you can't really appreciate from that photo above taken this past spring but we've really added a lot of stuff for the small space there is here. Anyway, getting back to your original question, no I wouldn't mow it. Go on hands and knees and pluck out the bad stuff, make note of things that you want to stay and make a natural garden plan either in your head or on paper of where you want things to go. I think you'll be much happier with the result if you do it by hand. You'll have very few seedlings if you keep ahead of flowers going to seed, the overall appearance will look much better and you will find that the natural native plants will move in on their own to fill in a lot of the dead space left by the missing things like Garlic Mustard. Thank you all for your advise. I love David Austin Roses but I am sucker for any rose with fragrance. Answering your questions @varovac and @SoFL. Here is my wishlist. I'll have to edit it out when I place the oder. I could put maybe 9 rose bushes in the planned space and few will go on the other side of the garden. Some of the roses will go in other side of the garden. Please let us know what varieties you've had the most success with. I'd like to add a few more roses to my woodland garden too.

CarolAnn your soil looks lucious and the woodland area seems calming to the eye...nice trees too. Seem like you really have it going on! I'm working on establishing a woodland area myself and it would be nice if I could spread my hostas around the trees as you have....I have voles and more voles....lol. Recently, I've potted some of the more special ones in large nursery pots. Knock Out roses is a very good choice. Good luck. Margaret

I've really come a long way since I took that picture of the birdbath area last year.
You just wouldn't believe the work my DH and I've done.
The first thing we did was build a small rustic arbor and plant a climbing pinkie rose. That rose has really taken off and it gets less sun than most require.
Here's a picture I took last Fall. The rose is on the left. Now the rose is almost all the way up the arbor. The birdbath area is on the left just past the arbor.

Ooooh!!! I love that shed...is that your potting area? I'm throwing hints around my house because I sure could use one for myself. I love everything in that picture. Is that a peach tree on the right. I mix a lot of different structures, plants and trees to get the cottage/country look that I'm use to. Did you find your pinkie rose thru catalogs....(I've been trying to find one) Keep up the good work...lol. Margaret

Thanks pearlgirl. Yes, that is my potting shed. I just added an old hoosier cabinet to the inside and an old porcelain stove. The cabinet is great to hold my supplies. Here's a picture of the inside.

Someday Carolann, I hope to do just that....post pictures!!
I'm in the process of learning how to use my camera (I'm getting there) then...to post the pictures the easiest way. I have tons of pictures of my garden, however, I really need to get familiar with my digital. My hubby reminds me constantly about that "chore"..lol.
I'm planting rhodos today and I plan to add some of those to the woodland area. Most of my trees are not quite to the mature stage, so my shade is scarce...I'll manage though.

Oh very pretty... I sent the link for this to a friend in Texas as inspiration for her...

I really love the picture of the shed and I LOVE kitchen queens! Of course, mine is in my kitchen... but I love what you did with yours!

Pearlgirl, I had a hard time finding a climbing pinkie rose. I had to do a lot of calling around.
My camera is an older one but I love to take pictures.
Keep working at it and you'll learn how. I like for someone to show me how to do things like use the dig. camera rather than read instructions.
Are Rhodos a perennial in zone 7? I don't know much about them. I guess they grow in shade.
