bleeding heart

I recently saw the web site of a gardening company that was new to me, called Great Gardens, out of Holland, MI.

They have this lovely new Dicentra called Burning Hearts

that I lust after. Also a prolifically blooming Heuchera

that would look great in my small front island bed.

Has anyone dealt with this company?

Supposedly, the dicentra blooms for 5 months, is a deep ruby red color and has blue/silver foliage. Really lovely.

And, hardy to zone 3.

Please let me know your thoughts on this company before I send out for some of their 'dream plants'. I will attach a link. Pondy

I have had bad luck ordering through the mail from three different companies and said to myself "Never again!"

I have found that if you are willing to wait a bit, the local garden centers will eventually get in the new releases when they are not so new anymore. They are also cheaper when they show up at the local places for sale. They will have a track record by then.

That new Bleeding Heart looks lovely but I am wondering if the dark color will really brighten up a shady spot.

Won't lilies create the same "what to plant in front" question once the foliage starts to die back? They bloom, the candelabrum get off and in pretty short order the stalks begin their decline and aren't the most attractive things in the bed. Seems this might be one of those it depends situations, but if your ferns and hostas thrive in these dry, shaded conditions, asilbe would too. As would the ubiquitous Stella d'Oro daylily as opposed to lilium varieties - the bloom wouldn't be profuse, but the foliage stays green and upright/arching. How about helebores? Aren't they supposed to be tough perennials keeping their foliage all season?

I don't grow this, but found comments at Paghat's Gardens on it where she has described her experience in the Pacific northwest. She comments that given adequate moisture (but not kept soggy) it will keep its leaves all summer. In response to Ken, in my experience, Dicentra spectabilis goes dormant consistently, but the fern leafed varieties don't necessarily. They may slow blooming in hot weather, but here in my NH garden, Dicentra eximia blooms much of the gardening season and the foliage is present all summer. I also have an unknown white-flowered variety (maybe also D eximia) that keeps its leaves all summer but doesn't bloom quite as long. I have a couple of them that are doing well. They didn't bloom the first year. Last year they had 2-3 little blooms. But this year they really put on a show. They have gotten about 25" long stems and are covered stem to stern with blooms. I even went so far as to yank out a bunch of larkspur growing up around them so I could see them. I have them on the north side of the house in full shade and planted in very sandy soil amended with compost. In the same bed I have an oak leaf hydrangea that's over 5' tall, some ferns, a echinacea (have no idea how that got in this bed), hydangea mycrophyla, rock rose, and a few other things whose names escape me now. But it seems to like that shady, sandy spot. Cheryl

Rosaprimula, I totally get that feeling although I don't have that many years in experience and not quite there yet in age. I did a lot of stuff from seed and cuttings at first but the past year or so I started becoming more 'lazy' and impatient on plants for my garden that I just started buying plants from the nursery and just planting it. Seeing established, nice and dense gardens from people in this forum makes me want to achieve that asap. But with self propagated plants I have to wait many years until I see any progress. Rouge, is that a seed grown one? If so you got lucky! It's so bright I didn't even see the white flowers until I zoomed in the pic Diggerdee, I rarely ever see any bleeding heart seedlings around here. Not sure what the difference is between the ones you see and I see. Can't say its climate either since you're not that far from me. But with this one I sowed it on flats and left it alone for the whole winter. Maybe I should've winter sowed it for better results

I wait at least 2 yrs before I buy any 'new' kind of plant. I have been burned several times over the years, and I'm tired of it. All the promises etc. of how great it is. If I really like it I'll check it out here at GW and see what other gardeners say about it. I seldom ever order online. The only exceptions are hostas. I buy from a trusted nursery. I go along with what Dilly-Dally says. It'll come to our local centers eventually and it'll probably come down in price.

I have decided to go ahead and try this new plant. Unlike some of you, I've had wonderful luck with Jungs out of Randolf, WI.

Will let you know if it perform as advertized.

I knew I had seen that plant in an email recently had to check to make sure. Brecks carries it new this year. it is going for $20 at their site. was thinking of ordering. Cost more but Breck is a reliable company. Not sure who else is going to carry it.. says bloom time mid spring to frost. you get 2-3 eye roots. zone 4 ships in april.
I have ordered alot with Brecks and had no problems

The cute shape of the flower and blue green color of the foliage come from the D. peregrina parentage. As such you may find that it needs better drainage than other Dicentra's and may flounder in hot temps. I don't know if this will be true or not, but given the alpine home of D. peregrina, you might want to keep this in mind.

Bluestone Perennials has it in their catalog at $12.95. I am planning to order it. Old fashioned bleeding heart does great here so am curious about this new type.
