UPDATE: Theme Garden Swap, Update 2
Comments (109)It'll be neat to see what seeds come in! I know I'm going to love some of them! (That insider trading thing, you know). I will probably order a couple of things after I see what comes back, so if anyone wants to try to do a group order, I'm open to that idea (I haven't tried it before, but saving on the seed company's shipping fee would be nice) I went to a garden show last weekend, put on by the master gardeners in the adjacent county. I got seeds! They had a seed swap, and I folded up some &%#@$% paper envelopes (the rules said "no plastic." grr) I'm glad I did, as I got some neat stuff. I now have a ton of yellow tithonia, so if you notice this, Drippy, you can strike that from my list! (or just send it, I'll pass it on). I got Hungarian Daisy, which I'd never heard of, but I'm glad I grabbed it. Sunset Echinacea--does that grow true? Does anybody know? I brought some wintersowing propaganda along too, so at the seed swap table, when people started saying "poppies are so hard to start from seed..." I had my brochures ready to go! It was really nice to go to a garden-related event at this time of year, even though I have wintersowing going on too. I hope everyone is staying warm, especially you, Drippy, with your hands out of your pockets, sorting seeds!...See MoreUPDATE: Theme Garden Swap
Comments (148)Ok there Lime,,, I will be planting a Spaghetti Squash (for seeds)and will be looking for some Dread Locks amaranth for Meat balls, to be sending you.... And with a name like Fill-More... Well, it's all in the name... Your sure to be getting MUCH more to fill your beds! That just happens to be a new bed started last year- believe me, they are not all so pretty..... and I tried something new- I have never used a purchased mulch before- I have used compost, leaves and grass, and always seem to add more weeds to the beds than moisture retentiveness- but wow! That is the ticket! From now on- every bed will be getting a thick coat of shredded cypress wood mulch! Very few weeds made it through- the water stayed right in the root zone instead of draining away in my sandy loam- so my notorious non watering self could stay "on top" of a need for water schedule. That is a very nice feature Drippy is adding to this swap- she will be sending the excess on the the newbie projects after we are full of seeds! No worries about tossing them- you will be tossing them in the right direction! To those yet to know about this wonderful GW world of seeds and the great folks who share them! I know I sent a ton of seeds in- and I sent in as much postage as they cost to send, but I am going to be sending on a bit more to cover the excess flow being sent on again. I think I will send chocolate and coffee too- Drippy may need it with all these wonderful seeds heading her way! Thanks Terri for the new mantra.... I think.... Comments (17)Just answering the 2 questions quickly because we will have lots of information in the sign up page. Promise, the swap is for anyone and everyone who is a member of GardenWeb. We usually get a pretty strong turn out for this swap. Sheri, I'll have all the logistics in the sign up thread. The main thing is once people list their 5 themes, you think of ways your seeds may fit in with those themes. Since there may be more than one person with a similar theme and so that I can get the right number of seed packs back to each person (you get the number you send in after they are sorted), it's best to slide the seed packets that you might intend for a specific person into a baggie or business envelope or something like that and label it as to who it is for rather than put names on individual packets - or you can simply incude a list. You will label the packets with a good description of the type of seed and when it was harvested. I try to follow your designation, but if someone has a a simple theme (e.g. yellow flowers), I may get 25 packets with that person's name, 10 of which are the same variety of marigold. Possibly that person sent in 10 packets for the swap so then I need to fit the extras or duplicates into other themes. Yes, it gets crazy which is why it takes me awhile to separate them! Some people send in more than they want to receive back, so typically you get a few more packets back than what you send in ... but it all depends on what is sent in for this swap. You will always get back at least the number of packets you send in. Anyone who is very eager can start to think of their themes, but don't post them yet... The swap rules sometimes change a little depending on the hostess but you can look at the earlier Theme Garden Seed Swap threads if you want to get an idea of how it goes. Have a great day! Comments (98)Plantaholics, I'm sorry this didn't turn out the way you had planned. Maybe drippy will be back to do this swap the same way as in the past next time. If you change your mind, we will be happy to have you join in. I have a questionnaire and instruction sheet ready for the participants. I am going to start to e-mail them this evening but not all will get mailed out today. I will continue with them through the weekend, but if you don't have them by Monday (or can't read what is sent - I am sending them as a Word document), get in touch with me. Okay? Once you get everything, follow the instructions and you can start to send seeds whenever you are ready. Hope we all have lots of fun. The nicest people seem to participate in this swap!!!
