?What Could Have Nibbled My Heated Birdbath?

Last night I plugged in our resin? heated bird bath that is attached to the deck railing. This morning I noticed two or three squirrel size nibbles and claw marks on each side!

What do you think? This didn't happen last winter.

They love to chew wire, anything they can. They tore wires in my engine that cost us $900.00 to repair. If ind that if you make peace with them, buy whole shelled corn and put it our for them to eat, and they seem to leave things along The corn is cheap by a 50' bag

It's sad to think they've turned on me! They drink from it daily. And I do provide corn and they eat the granules of it that fall beneath the three bird feeders. Oh my gosh - I just saw one chewing on it - right on the rim where the previous damage is!! Do you know of anything taste wise that would deter them but not the birds from standing on the rim?

Lowes and Home Depot carry a material called water blocking mix or hydraulic water block(or something to that effect)that is sold in the same area in the store where they sell quickcrete, portland cement, sand, etc. and that is made by the Quickcrete people. In my stores the material is sold in yellow tubs with a black lid if memory serves me correctly. This stuff is suppose to be used to stop water penetration through concrete block walls. The material mixes up as a black thick pastey material and it sets up very fast (personal experience talking). Perhaps this could be applied to the bottom of your bird bath to prevent the water from leaking through the structure. Applying it on the outside would prevent having to worry if it was leaching material into the water in the birdbath. Just a thought that I mentioned previously last year but never got around to trying.

ATHagan can you send me some of those lubbers, katydids,dead of course are they the same,Im interested in this will pay shipping E-Mail me Not joking ...Dale I ruthlessly assasinate every lubber I can find so I'm afraid I don't have any to send you. My grasshopper problem is brought on by smaller and more numerous species. The Eastern Lubber pictured above is the one I was talking about. The immature form is all black with a sporty orange or yellow racing stripe down the side. Very noticeable. The mature form pictured above can run to three, sometimes nearly four inches long. Not many of them, but at that size one can eat what a half dozen or more small hoppers eat. The smaller hoppers that are a problem right now are the green, green/brown, brown little guys. Last time I mowed the yard they looked like confetting flying away. Don't know what it is about this year that they are so bad. .....Alan.

I can definitely rule out kids with sticks. No kids here and the plant is on my side of a privacy fence. The squirrels ALWAYS take the whole bud, comfortably take a spot on the fence and munch away, much to my dismay. Haven't seen any grasshoppers however I've noticed a pair of aggressive brown birds (not sure what they were, that were almost guarding my hibiscus bush when I approached) in the area. (I'm not the best IDing birds, but if I see one of these guys, I'll grab the camera) Funny thing, today I must have about 10 open and INTACT blossoms. No evidence of nibbling. Whatever it was, it must have passed on. Thanks for the feedback guys, Sue (And if I have to deal with the problem again, I think I'll check out HD and get the liquid soap and spray)

yes, the box is well ventilated and in fact, i drilled extra ventilation holes around the top right before they nested in this box. i do feed freeze dried mealworms. however, these babies were still too small for them or for live mealworms, for that matter. i don't think there's a shortage of bugs around here. i often see the blues diving to the ground for bugs. i'm sure by the time the nest is finished and she is ready to lay, there will be a break in the heat. if not, i intend to pack up the dogs and the pot bellied pigs and we are heading to alaska!!

Hi Beth: Sorry to hear about this. I don't know why they have to be so ungrateful to us for providing them homes and food. We even make them squirrel houses where they stay in the winter and bear young in the spring. One thing that I dont feed them is peanuts with shells on them. When I did, they were storing them in the around the engine and then did the wiring damage.

Hi. I'm even sorrier about your car damage. At least I can replace the b bath for much less! In spite of everything, I do love watching the squirrels and birds on the deck. They bury stash in two planters - after they murdered the plants - that are now reserved just for them. :)
