I think many freeze reports need plenty of time before a good evaluation can be done. I'm starting to get a good idea now of just how bad this freeze was, so I'll go ahead and give a report. Most plants were at or past flowering. Easter morning it hit 21 F and it was below freezing for all but a few hours over two days. Some of the lower areas nearby got as low as 12 F Easter morning. Peaches, pears, pawpaws, currants, and gooseberries are all a 100% loss of fruit, but plants were either undamaged or are recovering well now. Fig trees still have green cambium, but all buds seem dead and the trunks are extruding weird white tubes (dried latex?), and they are gradually declining and may die to the ground. Kiwi vines were mostly killed to the ground. So far, only one unprotected vine is showing any sign of life on the upper portions, an MSU arguta. All others vary from totally dead wood to live wood, with dead buds. They all are sending up new shoots from near the ground. Blueberries are managing to produce some fruits from late flowers, but overall it looks like maybe a 5% crop. Grapes are recovering. Muscadines lost about 1/3 of the wood, but bud survival was excellant. Bunch grapes lost all primary shoots and apparently all secondary buds that were at the base of primary shoots did not survive. The new growth seems to only be from latent primary buds. Some cordon wood also died. Asian persimmons were still dormant, and are now leafing out rapidly. Raspberries and blackberries seem to have little to absolutely no damage, even though flower buds were near bloom at the time of the freeze. They are blooming now, so I should know if fruit set was normal in a couple of weeks. Aronia was just starting to bloom, and did not suffer any damage. ~kiwinut

Okay. 21st... 0F, with -26 wind chill. Also we had an ice storm. And then we went to Florida on the 22nd and, thankfully, missed all of that. 27th. Currently in the high 50s. High today was something like mid-60s to 70. Go Ohio weather! Dawn Redwood is fine. Sciadopitys also appears fine, which is good, because the weather we had from about the 20th to the 23rd is usually the worst we get around here, so that seems promising. Also I have no reason to believe that the cryptomeria and ginkgo were damaged by this as they're growing in pots inside my garage and protected from the harsh, Siberian winds, although I am a bit concerned about the soil being too peat-y (I thought I got the mix fairly light but now it looks like it's staying too moist) and the garage being TOO warm for dormancy requirements.

We finally dug out one of the two dead Syringa palibin, but the other one has one lonely shoot coming up from the ground. Actually, I've seen some benefits to that long, cold, snowy winter. A lot less annoying bugs. I normally get a lot of Boxwood psyllid and this year my boxwoods are looking better than they have in recent memory. All my roses but one are doing great. 'Julia Child' looks the best. Completely clean foliage and big fat buds getting ready to open, and very bushy appearance. 'Brother Cadfael', also big fat buds with a few insect eaten leaves to pull off. 'The Fairy' had a little more insect damage than the other two, but again, really bushy and pushing out a lot of buds. And the best benefit of all, a much lower population of winter moths. Bill - Am I missing something? I don't see a photo of your camellias that seanm1960 referred to. Very happy to hear so much in your garden is recovering. If they can make it through last winter, there's still hope I could grow a Camellia. I may give it another try and start off with a larger shrub next time. NHBabs, I added a new spicebush last fall and it looked dead as a doornail, but I left it and it did start pushing out new growth about halfway up only. So I finally trimmed off the dead tops of the branches and it's actually looking great at the moment and might almost be back to the size it was when I planted it last fall. Your yard got to minus 22?! That is pretty cold. lol Sounds like Minnesota instead of NH. Do you normally get that cold? My dogwood is a Rutgers cross between C. florida and C. kousa. It looked awful this spring, as I mentioned above. I think I mentioned I added 12 five gallon buckets of water around the base and now all this rain, I think will make a difference, but in my yard, it's hard to go the whole summer without something drying out. I'm sure I need to make sure it doesn't dry out at all for the whole season. If it doesn't come back fully next spring, I guess I'll have to go shopping for a new tree. Claire - glad to see that your hard work, swaddling your Crepe Myrtle paid off. Thanks Defrost - Our neighbor has a huge, very old Rhododendron up against the front of his house, facing West and I wondered how that was going to fare. It also has a Maple tree about 15 ft in front of it, blocking most of the sun. They allow it to grow to the roofline of their cape and it takes up the entire right half of their house. lol Right now the whole thing is covered with blooms from top to bottom. I'm amazed. Are you in zone 5?
