I've never had BER on such a young fruit.

Is this a wierd year or something???

BER frequently causes early ripening, so that may have been why a couple of your tomatoes ripened before they reached a typical size for the variety you're growing.

Questions:
How big is your container?
How often do you water?
What kind of potting mix did you use, name brand, etc.?
What is the calcium source you mentioned, and how much/often do you use it?

containerted - that's not BER, that's fruit abortion from inadequate pollination.

I had a problem with BER, but resolved the issue by moving the plant to a bigger pot and providing it with a source of calcium.

If you will review the BER FAQ here or the many discussions about it, you'll find that while moving to a bigger pot was likely a great thing for your plant, the disappearance of the BER was coincidental. ;) BER is not caused by a lack of soil calcium but by inconsistent soil moisture levels - too much or too little - that interferes with the plants ability to move the existing calcium to the fruit at the proper time as it develops.

And BER is a problem for many this year because of the weird weather, heavy rains, etc. Your BER will disappear just as it did last year, once the weather settles and the plant matures. I have linked many of the discussions currently going on here for your review below.

As to the early ripening fruit - no, the symptoms are not related and no neither is a sign of some serious problem. It happens normally, again in response to coincidental weather at the time the bloom is pollinated. It is not a problem.

You don't tell us the variety name or whether it is a determinate or an indeterminate or what size container you are using and we need to know that info. It would also be helpful to know how much and how often you water and what and how much you have fed the plant? What container mix are you using? All of those factors can affect the health of your plant.

Meanwhile you'll just have to wait out the BER like the rest of us. Be patient. ;)

Dave, I thank you. It didn't look quite right for BER, but after I cut into the dark area, it was penetrating below the skin and nothing else was close. I learned something new again from this fabulous forum.

Badlydrawndee -- Sorry, I wasn't trying to steal your subject.

It's in a decent size container ... more than a foot wide and deep. It didn't have drainage holes when I bought it, so I drilled them.

It's an indeterminate variety, but I'm not sure which anymore.

I potted it in deluxe CIL potting soil from canadian tire and I gave it JOBE's Tomato fertilizer spikes.

I picked all the ripening fruit, despite their small size, and brought them inside, and the tomato that came off in my hand has now almost fully ripened, too. They'll be edible this week, so I havn't lost any tomatoes (besides the BER ones), at least ...

I can't answer those questions but since fruit abortion happens quite frequesntly with squash and cukes and melons as well, for instance, as can BER, I thought I'd mention it so you can be sure to have enough chairs in the therapy waiting room. ( smile)

why do you think your plants need a source of calcium? If you added to much, that may be causing the problems you are having now. Any potting soil you buy will have enough calcium unless you are mixing your own but even then...What are you using for Calcium?
