Worlds smallest toad/frog... : )
Comments (10)That's about the size of the one I snapped a pic of the other night. 'Course mine was sitting a rock of the same color so he's virtually invisible =[. I know mine are toads though - got a good look at the zillions of eggs before they started to hatch, lol. Hubs *sigh* snagged a couple of dozen & put them in the [otherwise empty] aquarium so g-son could watch the transformation. Andddd..do you think hubs lowered the water level in the aquarium? Uh-uh, he just added a stack of rocks up to the top. I'm praying I don't come home from work one day soon & find my house invaded by toads!...See MoreFrog/Toad ID in my pond
Comments (7)I had a big frog of that size for 2-3 years in my little 200 gallon pond. He never bothered the fish, except when he'd take down a bird too big for him to eat and I'd have to fish the bird out of the pond. Trust me, he was eating these birds. I found him with a baby in his mouth once, and one time I found a dead bird I placed it next to the pond. Next morning the bird was back in the water. Only critter that would do that was the froggie. My frog wandered off this spring, my neighbors saw him on their deck. Took pictures and wondered where he came from. Wish he'd wander back. I have another frog in my pond but I very rarely see him, he hides under my bridge so when I do maintenance I see him hop away....See MoreToad & Frog Damage
Comments (5)I love my toads! I have a really bad ant problem (sandy soil) so much that I scrapped my winter sowing about 10 years ago due to the ants and never tried it again. I had all my cups outside and the ants used them as big ant houses! Yuk - I had to dump everything! Needless to say, my toads hang around my pot area because the eating is good so I know what you're talking about! It's more of a shock factor when the soil starts to move on you haha. They really haven't done too much damage on me so I haven't tried to deter them. Usually, they just get one side of the pot. I've even found them from time to time up on my deck planters trying to keep cool. If they are becoming problematic, I'll make a suggestion for you to try some tight knit chicken wire/mess over the tops of your pots. You could make a tent over the pots you need to protect with a strip of the mesh. I've noticed over the years that their population fluctuates considerably. One year when the population was low, my entire front lawn was little ant mounds when Spring hit :( Good luck! shimla...See MoreAttracting Frogs and toads into my yard
Comments (8)Frogs stay very near water, toads are more widespread since they do not need to stay near water except to have some to drink. If you've seen them at the edge of the yard, enticing them nearer shouldn't be hard. I used to get toads to stay in my yard by making little piles of rocks with crevices big enough for them to climb in. Occasionally I would find one under an unused pot (which I always leave upside-down when not in use so they don't hold any water.) I also had a huge bottom tray that I wasn't using for the pot it was supposed to be under, so I kept that filled with fresh water (change twice weekly to avoid breeding mosquitoes and algae.) I put it on the ground in the shade. Having lots of cool, moist, shady spots between and under large perennials and shrubs is attractive also. NWF has info about this, and Garden Gate magazine. A google search of toad habitat garden leads to many other articles....See Moresally2_gw
