Texas Gardening

amaranthus tricolor

I searched for previous threads on this plant, but didn't see any recent ones in the Texas forum.

I just bought one of these from Rainbow Gardens. I don't remember even ever seeing one before. Does anyone have experience growing them in Texas? Can you share any tips?

I have it getting 6-7 hours of full sun, in a dry spot.

Look about halfway down the page at the Love-Lies-Bleeding post--that's the common name for amaranthus. The one you purchased sure is a pretty variety.

I saw that thread, but I wasn't sure if the two varieties were close enough to have the same care requirements. I'll go read that and research some more. Thanks!

I know three varieties:
1. Amaranthus tricolor (red or purpure color - look here)http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7f/Amaranthus_tricolor5.jpg/200px-Amaranthus_tricolor5.jpg

2. Amaranthus viridis (green-white color)

3. Amaranthus spinosus (wild grown, having spikes/needle)

The first two are very popular in Asian, especially in Vietnam. People grow them to harvest the top of the plant or the leaves and cook them with soup, or just boil them just like herb vegetables.

I grow the Amaranthus tricolor (rau den - Rau dá»n in Vietnamese) in my back yard in Atlanta and it develops well. It's anual and will re-seed in the next spring. It loves sun and hot (65 F and above) and prefer moist soil. However It could tolerate the heat and drought for 1-2 weeks.
