Growing indeterminate tomato plants in pots

Hello. This is my first time planting tomatoes. I want to know do I plant indeterminate tomato plants at the bottom of the pot and pill on more soil as it grows, or do I put soil all the way up to the top of the flower pot and then plant the plant? Thanks.

plant tomatoes as deep as you can ,roots will grow from the burried vine.sometimes you may need to strip off bottom leaves and just leave the top 4 or 6 leaves on when planting .works great and is the prefered way

Fill the container to the top and the bigger the pot, the better luck you will have.

I've probably let them go too long, they are definitely peppers. Also has some sprout up in the area where I planted Tomatoes. The Tomatoes in the ground did horrible this year. Think they got hit with Weed N Feed fertilizer. Looked horrible but lived for months and now are taking off. So sad now that cold weather is on the way. I'll definitely replant what I can. Kind of like a kid that overcame all odds, will see if I can find some friends that will overwinter them. John

I think the plant is root bound based on what I saw when I emptied the containers holding the 2 other plants that I got rid of. I used about 6 gallon containers, but I guess that isn't big enough. I did see some very small black bugs in the soil so maybe they could be eating the roots. I will try spraying with insecticidal soap. The smaller fruits are still tasty. Would more fertilizer help or is fertilizer irrelevant to the problem? Night time temps here are high 60's, but daytime we are high 80's and even low 90's sometimes and of course it is humid so I do see blossom drop.

Removing Suckers, properly known as lateral branches, does work well in a greenhuse situation b'c of limited space. I have a commercial place near me where all tomatoes are grown in greenhouses hydroponically and they do the same. As for pruning plants outside that depends on whether someone is staking or trellising or growing them on hogwire, or in cages or just letting them sprawl. I grew mine by sprawling and some in cages and sometimes the same variety was grown both ways and never once did I take off lateral branches. The word sucker came about b'c ages ago some felt that leaving them on sucked energy from the plant. But that's not true at all, but the word sucker is still used. Lateral branches are very productive as to fruits, and takingoff those lateral branches just lessens the yield of plants. Carolyn

I just grow cherries - Sungold and Sweet Millions. Cherries always produce heavily in our climate and I like the taste best - like tomato candy!! Early harvest varieties that perform pretty reliably here are Early Girl (some claim it is tasteless), Stupice, Oregon Spring, Willamette, Glacier, and Siberian. With anything else, it is pretty much of a toss up as to whether you will be able to harvest ripe tomatoes by the end of the season. Maximizing sun exposure and taking advantage of reflected heat (growing against a south or west facing wall, growing in containers on a paved surface, etc) will help.

Yes, use the biggest pot you can get your hands on.

At least 5 Gal size or (better yet)larger.

Be careful that you keep them hydrated. Don't let them
dry out. I used to use big saucers with mine and I was
filling them daily.

I've grown tomatoes in containers and in the ground the past few years. Containers are just trickier, with moisture and nutrients being 2 big issues. I don't presume to have figured everything out, but I'm becoming a big fan of mulch so that I don't have to water quite as often.

Best thing to do is plant them as deep as you can, use "Potting Mix" I use Miracle Grow with Moisture Control, then mix in a a bag of Moo-Nure which is cow manure and compost mix.
Make sure you drill several holes in the bottom to allow for very good drainage.
Put about 2-3" of your favorite mulch on top.
Use no less than a 15 Gallon pot, this way the watering and nutrient uptake becomes less tricky and the roots have plenty of room to spread.

Water them everyday, the excess water just drains right out.

Feed them every 9-14 days with what ever you prefer, I have been using MG for Tomatoes.

I just planted 3 Dwarfs yesterday, all in 15+ gallon pots with said mixture.

I grow in 5-gallon pots and have had tremendous luck with it. I went to Tractor Supply and bought some cages and staking materials and have constructed a sturdy cage to hold them. Just feed them every ten days and make sure they don't need for water and things will be good.
