Which is more important - Good Soil or good sun?

I have a few tomatoes that I really want to thrive.

I can

(A) put them on my deck in 18 gallon containers with Miracle grow potting soil. They will get a few hours of direct sun light and then I guess the rest of the day you would call "partial shade".

OR

(B)Put them in the ground in a location where they can climb up a wall and be in full sun all day. However my house is built on the red clay earth or Tara. Just kidding. But seriously, I could build sculptures out of the clay chunks I find in my ground. I can dump some Miracle grow fertilizer on the ground, but that's all I can do at this time.

Which is more important? Sun or dirt?
