Comments (3)I agree with kimmsr, which doesn't happen very often ;-). If you put down heavy mulch, you would suppress most new weed growth. For additional weed suppression many gardeners put down thick layers of newspaper, wet them and cover them with a nice layer of mulch. Then newspapers don't last forever, but they do a great job of weed suppression in new beds. Comments (6)I have a thistle related to Canadian thistle. I've had total success cutting off the tap root below ground with a shovel. Dig it in at an angle from about 2 inches away from the root and cut it off. The plant does not come back. As for the others, Yardvaark has the solution....See MoreKimmsr
