Fungicides = Tough Skin?

I swear that spraying fungicides on tomatoes causes the skin to thicken and toughen.

Any scientific proof or incidental experience to support this?

The 3 primary causes of tough skin on tomatoes is under- watering, the variety genetics, and high temps. Guess which is the primary contributing factor - under-watering.

Spraying fungicides? I regularly apply Daconil on many different varieties and have for several years. But other than the normal varietal differences I've not noted any changes in skin texture or thickness.

Recommend you only spray (true for any sprays) in early AM and never in the direct sun or heat of the day.

Agree completely with Dave.

The one variety I will always remember as having tough skins is Roi (king) Humberto, a pre-1800 variety and it isn't b'c it's a pre-1800 variety either, it's just an example of genetics, as Dave mentioned above.

I don't remember any tough skins as being associated with spraying anti-fungals or even sprays used for bacterial foliage diseases.

It's directly related to the variety you grow. I don't know if growing conditions have any influence. But a thinner-skinned tomato is more likely to split. I have been growing Romas for the past few years because they seem to be a happy medium between skin thickness and splitting. This year I also planted Heartlands and (I think...) Manitobas (I lost the tag) but they haven't ripened yet so I don't know what the skins are like.

Helen, I've never heard of a tomato variety that had tough skins, or thin skins that stinkbugs couldn't penetrate and shoot in that poison that kills the cells under the skin leaving a white area and a yellow area on top of the skin. Momotaro is called Tough Boy in Japan, but that name is after a folk hero in Japan and doesn't refer to tough skins. However I did Google it and quite a few sites say tough skins which makes it more tolerant to cracking. I've grown lots of varieties that had hard skins, the pre-1800 variety Roi Humberti comes to mind, and I have't the faintest idea if it was resistant to stinkbugs b'c having stinkbug problems is not an every year problem for my tomatoes. So why not try it and plant two thin skinned varieties on either side of it and see what you get as to stinkbug problems. Carolyn

All varieties of my cherry tomatoes this year seem to have very tough skins. What causes this? Is there anything I can do about it? **** From all the folks who have asked about that and received answers the consensus seems to be it's the particular weather in a certain growing season. No, no specific aspect of the weather to note since different folks have different answers. So no, you can't do anything about it as far as I can see. I wonder if Kumato might fit the bill. These are the brown tomatoes that you can find in grocery stores in the winter. From what I hear, they come true from saved seed. They have tough skins and are about the size of a golf ball. Linda ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ wikipeda says that it is a heirloom, originally from Spain (under different names ). The company that grows KUMAO and distributes fruits won't sell the seeds. BECAUSE, they want to sell the fruits . Trader Joe's sells them. I Bough a package ($3.79/lb). Dave's garden says: that the fruits are sterile and seedless !! That is nonsense. They are loaded with seeds. So I will grow one plant.

Thanks... my Rutgers really have tough skins this year... and it is my first year with having a drip system... go figure.

My elderly nursery owner friend said strong afternoon sun will toughen eggplant skin in this area. Maybe tomato too?
