i found this frog/toad in my garden. any information on this amphibian would be appreciated.

Looks like the dreaded Cuban Tree Frog, to me. They are a highly undesirable and destructive invasive species, if this is what you have. Their coloring varies, as does the intensity of the spots on their bodies so look up several different images to compare.

I am in Michigan so I am not familiar with this tree frog, but I have heard it is a problem. Can you tell me why? Kinda like our bull frogs here eating all the native frogs?

I used Neem this spring and I've seen 8 dead and dying bumblebees on our rosebushes, within the last 6 weeks. There are several recent newspaper articles about a greatly increased mortality rate of bees in NOrth America. I wonder if the increased awareness of the harmful effects of artificial pesticides has led to an increased use of Neem,which is made from a culinary herb, and if Neem is what is killing the bees. I've gone back to using Cornell spray. I use a garlic, jalepeno,onion spray against thrips on my white and light pink and yellow roses. Luxrosa Cornell Spray. Prevents mildew, rust and b.s.. baking soda 1 to 2 tsps. I use 2 on the few roses which require the extra amount. 1 tsp. of canola oil ( it disperses in water) Thrip spray. 1/2 head of garlic (you don't need to peel it. 1/2 onion 2 whole jalepenos. 1 quart water. 1 tsp canola oil. Blend everything, let sit for 4 hours at room temp. Strain with cloth twice. Keep any extra in the refrigerator. Lux.

When someone says "that smarts", they mean "that hurts". So "smarting on the skin" means it causes pain on your skin. Herb Robert grows wild here in Oklahoma along water ways, lakes or ponds and ditches, but any moist place. I can testify that it spreads rampantly, by roots, seeds, little pieces of the stems that drop on the ground and root, and God only knows how it gets from one side of the yard to the other, but it does. Pulling it out does not get rid of it because it produces a massive root system of tiny fibrous roots. When you pull out the plant, part of those roots remain in the ground and regrows a whole plant. It only takes one tiny piece of root to regrow an new plant. It is EXTREMELY invasive and very difficult to eradicate! I too introduced pretty Pink Knotweed or Smartweed to my garden about 8 years ago. I planted it near my fish pond on the north side of my house. It was indeed beautiful there, but it didn't stop there. It went down into my pond! It jumped across the lawn to the area against the house under the water faucet and then around the AC condenser unit where it stays moist. From there, it moved to the back yard area by the patio and all around the edge of the patio. This year I found it over in the Potager and nearly every flowerbed and veggie bed in my one-acre garden. It is everywhere now. It loves any kind of soil, but really goes to town where it is wet. I cannot imagine how bad it would be in my garden if I had soil that held moisture year round and we didn't have severe winters to kill it back. ~Annie

Kind of funny story - a couple of years ago the guy across the street trotted over to show me this mysterious worm he found on his tomato plant. He wondered if it was something very rare because he had never even heard of a worm with horns and perhaps UCONN might be interested in having this specimen and maybe, just maybe, he had discovered something that could be beneficial to some plants here in tobacco valley and he could breed them and make money! He said there were many of them on his three patio tomato plants. "Whatta ya think, Jane? Should I put it in a jar?" I asked to see it in my gloved hand and as this guy was envisioning $50 bills, the silly worm reared it's head with horns and mouth seeking something to bite. I dropped it on the driveway and with a flash of my right foot, the mysterious money-making dream shrank into a bite-less green blob as my neighbor went into one of the most shocked and crestfallen expressions I'd seen in a while. I told him he had lost the horn worm lottery and to go home and squish all the others. I have a feeling that my reputation as a nice neighbor lady turned into tough old broad that day in the driveway. "Please stop OBSESSING over things to the point of needing POISON to do something." So if someone is dying of an infection or cancer, they should not use a potentially toxic antibiotic or definitely toxic chemotherapy medication to treat it? People should stop celebrating New Years with champagne? Ethyl alcohol is most definitely a poison - try drinking 500 ml of it undiluted and see what happens. POISON is just a scare word. Should be ban people from growing Aconitums, because they are very POISONous lol? "It boggles my mind how much energy and money is wasted on front lawns" Yes exactly why I agree, a lot of people probably shouldn't have them. Especially the morons who scalp their lawns 2-3 times a week, causing a lot of lawn mower emissions, and just end up with a big pile of crabgrass and Microstegium. (well it usually isn't must of a pile...more like a concrete covered in dingy green) If people in the midwest want to have a front lawn of native prairie - go for it. I guess you can call the fire department out to protect their house during the periodic once-a-decade burn down. BTW it won't have dandelions in it, because they are a Eurasian invasive. If people in the east want to have forests as a front yard (and back), go for it. Definitely better for the environment than a lawn scalped 2-3 times a week. I've leave it as a mental exercise for people to see through your "As a matter of fact, the dandelions actually make things grow better!" I guess they can pull N P and K out of a trans-dimensional portal, too.

thanks for the info. i read the article and looked at some photos of the cuban tree frog, and while the photos bear a marked similarity with the frog in my photo, the description of the cuban tree frog does not match with the frog i observed. but i hope it's not the cuban tree frog.

i live in california and found the frog in a cool, dark, dry cardboard box where i store jars of seeds outdoor. i'd say it's about 1.5 to 2 inches.

Glad to hear it, vinh. I hope that someone from your part of the country will be able to ID this pretty frog. The Cuban has not shown up in the west, as yet.

Have you gone over the the NatureNet location in GardenWeb and posted your good picture in the Reptile and Amphibian forum? It won't go unidentified for very long. Be sure to post your location.

Likely a California Tree Frog (the frog which says "ribbet" in all the Hollywood movies).
