Nutsedge Control?

I have nutsedge throughout my gardening area. The seeds were brought in by delivered top soil that wasn't screened. So, everywhere I added this soil, I have nutsedge, which spreads. To date, I have manually tried to dig it out, to no avail, and also have used a product called Manage, which is a selective herbicide for Nutsedge. Although, the Manage will kill the green portion of the weed, it does not kill the seed, or "nutlet", so it does keep coming back. I understand that, over time, the "nutlet" will die due to lack of green growth. My question is, is there something else on the market that is selectively used for Nutsedge that will kill the "nutlets"? Has anyone managed to eliminate this weed?

Manage is it but may take several applications. The trick to nutsedge is to zap it after the 2nd leaf stage but before the 5th. Somewhere around the 3rd and 4th leaf stage is when it's most susceptible. Still, it may take more than one attempt to exhaust its energy supply. Just keep at it. The real test is preventing it from returning next year. So, just rock and roll with it until YOU win or you'll battle it for the rest of forever.

Sometimes, I'll dig it up with my shovel. I usually get all the nutlets that way. It damages the turf, but it usually recovers. If it doesn't, I install a grass plug.

I'm no chemist, but I've had great success with sulfentrazone in my yard killing nutsedge, kyllinga & crabgrass. It comes in several formulations from a few different manufacturers, but I like to use a pump sprayer so my preferred product ends up being sedge ender. It has a prodiamine dose built in to prevent new sprouts in the same spot too, which is nice. The nutsedge starts to go yellow within 24 hours & when it finally does come back a few months or a year later, it's already deformed & yellowing. That just makes them easier to see & easier to zap again the second time. There is no one & done treatment for nutsedge, it's a process but sulfentrazone based herbicides are my best weapon

I don't see it specifically mentioned on the label (I may be missing it), so I'll give you the same data as for both Sedgehammer and for herbicides where no time is mentioned or you don't have the label. Three hours between application and rainfall/irrigation is good, four hours is optimal. Of course, there are tons of exceptions where rain can fall a lot sooner than that and things will be just fine--but that's a safe number for every single herbicide on the market currently.

The company that makes this, also makes a product that supposedly kills bermuda growing in fescue lawns. I bought a pricy large size container of this (the only size I could find available) and applied it exactly as stated on the label. Nothing happened. I increased the amount of herbicide slightly and killed the fescue, and the bermuda merely laughed. I can't help but wonder if you will have the same sort of result with another product from the same company... I sure wasn't impressed and am out almost a hundred dollars to boot. Sue

As suggested above, keep after this plant, or you may need to rent some hogs to root it out.
