What kind of pest looks like a frog?

A few weeks ago I gave some ssedlings to an acquaintance.

This evening I saw her and she handed me a plastic bag with some tomato leaves in it that had been damaged (small holes about 1/8" in diameter).

Also in the bag are some insects that I have never seen before. If you take a casual look at them, even under a lens, they look almost like a small frog,

less than 1/4" long. Take a closer look and they are clearly an insect, mostly brown in color with a shiny back that appears to be covered with a clear "plastic"

shield. Within this shield are four areas extending at the four corners that look like stubby legs but aren't. Turn it over and there are six yellowish "true" legs.

It also has yellowish antennae and the back is sort of humped. I've never seen such a thing and can't match it with any picture I can find on the net.

I would almost like to call it a scale insect of some kind except for the legs. This is a mystery to me and I sure hope to not get them.

Any help?

Thanks
