Can anyone ID this weed for me?

It comes up every year in my yard ... nothing I've tried kills it so this year I dug it up. The root is more like a carrot and very woody. I hate these things and would love to know what they are and how to kill them!

Where in the United States are you? Zone 8 tells us that your minimum winter temperatures might be in the 10 to 20 degree range but that is all. That plant might be a native for a certain eco system.

kimmsr, I am located in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. None of my local facebook friends could positively ID it for me. It's a mystery weed :(

Yup, JayK is right--it's a Manroot vine. We've got them growing here in Washington, but for us, it's a native plant (i.e. only a weed if it's growing where you don't want it). We get a big clump of them growing through some bushes, but since our property is mainly native plants and they certainly aren't bothering the bushes, I think they look kind of cool.

Three down, one to go......I asked for help from a local gardening group and was able to get all but one of my "unknown" weeds identified. Number #2 has been sucessfully identfied as GARLIC MUSTARD Number #3 is PRICKLY LETTUCE (thanks jean001) Number #4 isnt even a weed....its a BLACK LOCUST TREE

Looks like seedlings from a nearby tree that has acorns of some sort. I get the same thing from my oak trees. If this is the case- hand pull before they get too big and become hard to pull out by hand.

You've done the one thing sure to get rid of this - dig it up. You could also try smothering if you have solid areas of this.
