Need Weed/Plant ID Please! Pic link included

Hi-

I have 3 plants that I need help identifying.

The first one is a small shrub-like plant w/ small yellow flowers. Foliage is a blue-green. Not the most attractive plant.

The second is a tough leaved plant w/ tiny stickers covering the leaves and is topped by small purple flowers (in the pics, they're close to opening). I transplanted this in the fall and where I removed it, small plants are reappearing. It gets big...

The third is a bed of something that just took off like crazy. I'm thinking this is a weed, but would like to know before I yank them. Maybe something from the bird feeder? It hasn't flowered yet, but I want to ID it before it does and goes to seed.

Hello terriberry in Ohio,

Plant number 1 is probably some type of rue (Ruta species). Crush the leaves and see if they have a very strong, distinctive odor. If they do, then the plant is almost certainly a species of rue.

Plant number 2 (the tough-leaved plant with small purple flowers) is very likely a comfrey of some sort (Symphytum species).

Without flowers, it is very hard to say what plant number 3 is although my best guess is that it is something in the daisy family. However, flowers are needed to confirm its identity.

I'm going to let 1 and 2 live, since I think you're right on the ID. The comfrey should be a good plant to share since where I moved the plants from, many babies have sprouted.
I will keep an eye out for the flowers on the 3rd plant and if they are in the daisy family, they may escape the compost pile as well....

I think what I thought was milkweed syriaca (sp) is actually dogbane. I have a growing stand of it way in the back that I've let go for the past two years. It showed up on its own, and if it is dogbane, I'm going to yank it, dig it, destroy it this year. I'm trying to remember what the seed heads looked like, but I'm drawing a blank. I do remember getting the tent caterpillars on them last year, and I've read the dogbanes will get those. So, in answer to your question, that's the only experience I've had with it, and I don't want it to continue. LOL.

Looks like cassia (senna) bicapsularis. It's a favorite of sulphur butterflies. It normally blooms in the fall but I noticed that my neighbor's plant is blooming now too. Crazy weather! Here is a link that might be useful: Cassia bicapsularis

rotflmbo .... thank god you have a camera.. and some good garden friends... lol .... ALWAYS keep in mind.... one bug means nothing .... if and only if you go out there one day .. and see all the leaves chewed off the plants.. will you need to worry ... then you have a plague ... and need to worry ...
