Is that Compari from seed taken out of a store bought tomato? If so, did you plant more than one, and can you see any differences between plants?

Also ... how tall is that Campari plant and how many individual fruits are set on it so far? Does it grow like a typical greenhouse cordon plant?

Rocklandguy, I saved Campari seeds last year and started seed along with the rest of my spring crop. Didnt have room for the seedling so I gave it to my neighbor. He gave me some of the fruit. When I cut into the first one, it was still green on the inside. I let the next one sit for a week and it still was not truly ripe. So it appears that the Campari has a long shelf life. It would be interesting to know if your experience with it is similar.

I am also growing campari this year. I bought some tomatoes in may, did a quick ferment and planted the seeds. I set the plants out about 3 weeks ago. I planted 2 plants for comparison. So far both are performing the same,about 18 inches tall with several marble size fruit. They seem to have quite a stretching habbit. Have you experienced the same? It would actually be great if they were long keepers. Might get us into Oct. Nov. ? Please keep your results posted to compare. These are the only decent tomatoes during the cold months.

Yes, the seeds came from a store bought campari. I planted the seeds on March 9th. One plant in the pot in the picture is 4"4". I have another in the ground, started the same date, but it is only 3"8". Each branch on both plants are loaded with clusters from 3 to 6 tomatoes. The first tomato had a green spot on the inside, probably could have let it ripen a little longer, but I wanted to eat it before the chipmunk. It tasted wonderful!

Hi Rob, I went to my local nursery and asked if they had any. They are the pots that the nurseries get trees in. Once the the trees are sold and planted, I guess the pots just hang around. I was willing to pay for them but they gave me two of them. Maybe they felt sorry for me. They are quite large but probably the closest thing to simulating being planted in the ground. I have one on each side of my shed. I have a mix of ProMix BX, peatmoss, and a little regular dirt. The picture tells the rest of the story! Paul

I can't figure out why they won't work... darn this age of technology! I'll post the pics when I get it fixed.

Does the fruit taste like its parent? I looked up campari tomato on wikipedia and discovered it's a hybrid.

A co-worker was snacking on some today so I was curious.

Or did you post on another thread that I haven't found yet? ;)

I have two Campari plants. One in a pot and one in the garden with the rest of the tomato plants. They both seem to be performing the same. They do taste good, like the parent, but don't seem to ripen inside so quickly. That might be a good thing for the end of the season. I posted another thread "Porterhouse, Campari, & Beefy Boy - Pics". Check that one out because I have new pics on that one.

Penguingardener,I can't answer for Rocklandguy but I too am growing out camparis.My fruit seem to be smaller than those shown in his photos,maybe 3 ozs. The seeds are from store bought tomatoes. The flavor is INCREDIBLE. I still have store-saved seeds and I will also grow out some seeds from these I have grown this year,see the comparison next year. These have got to be 1000x better than the Camparis in stores.

I discovered Campari tomatoes very recently -- at Aldi's. They were offered at a great price, too, still on the vine and perfectly ripe. I'm going to attempt to grow from seed.

For those of you who have tried this, has Campari (F2) turned out to be determinate or indeterminate?

I love Campari tomatoes and would like to try growing my own from the seeds in the Camparis I've gotten at the store.

People mention fermenting to get the seeds. What is that, why is it done and how does one go about doing this? Is it necessary? I know that tomatoes that have fallen to the ground will naturally ferment, so is it necessary to ferment the tomatoes in order to get viable seeds?
