Playmates for my Tomatoes

Fred_in_Maine

I read that tomatoes like Carrots. They also like celery, chives, basil and pole beans. I wonder how close these companions can be planted to the tomatoes?

As my Toms are newly planted and still small it looks like I have plenty of room in my tomato raised beds to add some companion plants. My tomato beds are 2 feet by 6 feet with three indeterminate tomato plants in each bed. I know my Toms will get big.

Each bed is only 6 inches deep but with loose well draining soil. I am told that tomato plants have large root systems and I want my babies to grow big so I wonder if it would be better to devote all of the soil to the Toms.

Or would the Toms do better with some companions? Can anyone suggest how many, which companions and where in the bed I should place them?

Thanks for any ideas. Fred in Maine
