3 should give good results if you want a lot of plants in a small space.

I have 6 clones going now from a mother plant that has produced fruit and stopped flowering. 2 of the clones are now making buds which look like they will flower. I'll update this thread with photos if it works or fails since there seems to be no info on the topic anywhere.

davek913 Sometimes a spouse can force us to grow, and in your case, it's tomatoes! :-) At least you've got some interesting and tasty ones. I generally go to Dave's Garden to get a sense of how my tomato plants should be spaced too, since I don't prune them but just remove the lower branches under the first blossoms. That's to allow for vertical air flow from the soil level up through the plant. I usually go for the smaller recommended spacing and make sure the tomato plant has plenty of nutrition through the season. The Principe Borghese is a determinate and won't require as much space as the indeterminates. The Sunset's Red Horizon, Pink Oxheart, and Abraham Lincoln are all three indeterminates, but they don't need much more space than the Principe Borghese. Since this is the first time you will have grown the tomatoes on your own, in your shoes, I think I'd space them all the same, at either 3 or 4 feet since you have the space. Your next big choice will be how to support the indeterminate ones unless you plan to allow them to sprawl. Some people do, while most people like to make them grow vertically to keep them away from insects and other pesky things that can hang out in the soil. The determinate Principe Borghese will need little or no support, though most people would at least give it a stake so it can stay upright during all kinds of weather and fruit-bearing. (These two plants might be best for your containers, too.) At any rate, it looks like you'll set only six of the plants into the earth. I actually set six plants that size in a 5' x 8' bed by stagger-planting three on each side and running a length of cattle panel through the middle to which I tie the plants as they grow. My primary concern about spacing is not branch-room above the soil but the unseen root-room below the soil. They grow better when the roots have room to spread out and I can always remove branches if things get too jungly. You'll have to decide what's best for you this time around. That's how we all do it, and that's why we use several different ways to grow, support, and space tomatoes! Have fun! Though sod-cutting isn't my idea of fun, once that's done you can amend the soil and set up your space to make a great home for those plants.
