How to make a mother tomato plant

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how I would go about making a mom tomato plant, like to take cuttings from. I hate growing from seeds for some reason, plus it's a lot cheaper and easier to just take a cutting off a plant when I want a new one because it's free.

How would I make sure my tomato plant is female... is this really important? I read somewhere else that there are no male or females in tomatoes, but I find that hard to believe.

Do I need to keep it in vegetative state? Should I keep it indoors under a fluorescent light 24/7? I though that would stop the plant from flowering, but I am not really sure. I saw another post where someone asked about keeping a plant in vegetative state and no one really gave a definite answer, just wondered why someone would want to do such a thing.

I'm new to gardening, so I would appreciate any help I can get, thanks. :)
