How to remove Wild Violet weeds from Lawn?

I've been battling wild violets in my lawn for a couple of years using various products with no success (speedzone, trimec). Any suggestions for this weed that spreads rather quickly?

Not sure other than digging them up in early spring. I let mine grow (along with the dandelions), they look so pretty together.

There is nothing you can buy that will even begin to make a dent in the population of wild Violet except making the soil your turf, and the Violets, grow in less conducive to their growth. Have a soil test done by your states USDA Cooperative Extension Service (if I had some idea where you were I could supply a link) and adjust the soil as needed to discourage them. Violets seem to grow more readily in soils with a pH lower than is optimal for most grasses.

Thanks dchall san antonio for the recommendation. I actually bought the fiskars 3-claw garden weeder from amazon and then read your post. I will see how that goes, it is stainless steel and had good reviews. Looks similar to the WeedHound tool. Bassplayer7, well my yard is 0.318 acres and the weeds are not too much, about total 10 plants, but there are lots of large (10-12 inches) patches of white clover growing here and there. I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t think I will tackle that, it looks very green and pretty. For now I will leave the clover, because i dont think i can dig that out, it will leave large bare patches.

If you keep cutting or pulling the leaves, the rhizome will eventually weaken and die, but it might take all season. I have a lot of violets, and I'm resolved to live with them and keep them from over-running everything. Besides the rhizome that can grow on the surface of the ground or buried a foot deep, they reseed prolifically. I learned to recognize the seedlings so I can pull them when they're still tiny and fragile. Whoever coined the term "shrinking violet" never gardened with these guys!

We have a wicked infestation of wild violet. Monterey makes an organic herbicidal soap that kills what's above ground but they'll come back. Our next attempt to get the violets out of our beds will be to cover the area with heavy black plastic for a week or two. Then we will remove the plastic to till the area and manually rake out the foliage and roots. I expect we will need to till multiple times to clear out all the roots. After this process we will put in our perennials, mulch heavily, and be vigilant for violets poking up through the mulch. I really don't mind them in the yard...just not in my garden beds.

If it's a serious infestation just dig a couple of inches and sift for roots. There's no point in replacing a few inches, seeds will be throughout and will just grow through the new soil. Other than that - follow Jean's advice, keep at those seedlings. Good luck.

Thanks for the comments. Sounds like I should continue to lime and maybe the violets will disappear over time.
