Lou, (or anyone else who might have suggestion) One of my grandson's brought a little Mexican White Oak seedling home from school yesterday. It leaves look good. The roots are in a little 'dirt' tied up in a baggie. He's so proud of his tree and wants to plant it right away. He's asking me to help but I'm not sure if it should be put in a pot and planted later in the winter, or planted in the ground now. I'd say its about 10 inches tall at this point. I told him I'd figure out the best way to do it and we'd get to it this weekend, but to keep it in the shade for now. Bless his heart, he thinks I know EVERYTHING about planting stuff. Clearly I don't. :)

Randy, I get mine from Petal Pushers in Cedar Hill. It's the closest to where I live and they have good selection of old roses. Weston Garden and North Havens have them but they are a little too far for me. For internet, I buy roses from Chamblee's and Vintage. China roses are supposedly easy to grow here in Dallas area so I'm trying White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth, Bengal Fire ( Miss Lowe?), and Cramosi Superiuer (never could spell that right). I am also trying Mrs Dudley Cross... I got a another Marie Pavie from Vintage as I've read that it's different than the eastern ones so I'm curious to find out if that's the case. I don't know about KO roses... I'm one of very few (3 or 4) in my neighborhood growing KO roses. There doesn't seem to be very many "gardeners" here. Maybe it's the rocky soil that they just gave up trying to plant something. It's not easy and it is very time consuming compared what I've experienced elsewhere. Right now, I'm just enjoying this MUCH needed rainfall... :) Lou

DFW briefly touched freezing temps for the first time early on the 22nd - which happens to be the average first freeze date for the area..... probably the first "average" weather event we've had this year :-) We were out of town, but returned to browned tops on the cannas and tropical sages. Not many other signs of damage. Crape myrtles seem to be approaching peak color, but many others are still pretty green for this late in the fall. Looking like we may be raking leaves well into January.
