leaf curl on only one type

I've got cherokee purple and blackbrandywine and redbrandywine,paulrobeson and rutgers

The cherokee purple has leaf curl which both ends of the leaf curl up none of the other plants have this.I can actually Identify the cherokee purple because of the leaf curl,Is this a normal trait?Its a new to me plant and with all plants together I have 52 plants out,just the cherokee purple have the leaf curl..most are all together but some are scattered in a row and even then I can spot the cherokee purple..

Can you post a picture? The other tomatoes you list are usually of the Regular Leaf form, and I am wondering if you are confusing the Potato Leaf form with leaf curl?

If not, we need more info, so....

To be able to suggest what might be wrong with your plant, it would be helpful to know more about the environment it is in. So, here are the "usual" questions:

Is the plant in the ground or in a container?

If in a container, what growing medium are you using? How large is the container? Is it self-watering or do you manually water it? Is the container in full sun, part sun or shade?

For both container plants and inground plants, it would be helpful to know these things as well: How often do you water? Have you checked the moisture of the growing medium or soil 3-5" below the surface? Is it dry, just right, or soggy? Are you feeding the plant? How often? What are the NPK values of any fertilizers you are using to feed it? What has the weather been like in your area?

If the plant is in the ground: Have you used any amendments? Do you mulch? If so, with what and how much (how deep)? Are there any other plants near the problem plant? Do they show the same signs?

The more information you can give us, the better the chances that someone can give you an accurate diagnosis.

Betsy my cherokee purple is regular leafed and my red brandywines are potato leafed.they are in the ground and none of the other tomato plants are showing these signs,might just be those that I'm calling cherokee purple(cant guarantee my seed source because of trading)are more suseptible to environmental stresses because we did go near 100 degrees last week and thats when I noticed.other than that they are healthy and growing vigorously.Was just curious..

Hi Connie, I don't have aphids, I sure do hate those things. But had a small(amazing right?) white fly problem a few weeks back and those seem to have gone away since I added worm castings to the soil. Also, the white flies were only on the side closest to the "trunk" of the grape vine. Where this is happening is all the way towards the end of the main vine. The main vine it self is about 15' long. I was thinking it was something with soil or maybe something else since this new growth. Thanks!

Ken, that is like saying don't marry the daughter until after you see the mama. In my case, if I waited to see mature hosta before I brought the wee babe home, I'd not have a single hosta. I totally remember when I was smitten by hosta. It was love at first sight. I walked into the Asian Market in Chelmsford, and the owner had her mama's Sum and Substance in a pot near the register. I did not know that hosta grew as big as an elephant ear!! Wow. It sure made my DH's green w/white margin old fashioned hosta look pretty puny. Right now, I'm at the stage of wanting to find a list of those with good substance and any other factors which will make them endure the climate I plan to grow them in. Here on the Hosta Forum we have folks singing in three- and four-part harmony--some in New England, midwest/far north, upper south, and more recently a little squeaky note from the far south. I think it is really making some fine music. Also, successes are nice to read about, but so are the failures. Things which did not work out. Including soil mixes, sun and shade trials, infatuations for plants which turned to boredom or disappointment. A plant which started good but failed to live up to expectations. I don't think I'll ever stop choosing plants with names which are significant to me, although I'm willing to let plants by any other name surprise and delight me. A rose is a rose IS a rose after all. especially it is is a plantagenea. :)

OK, so I've been doing a bunch of reading around the web and am starting to get a picture of what may be wrong with these little toms. Underside of leaves are purple on older leaves but not the veins... may well be a nute deficiency? Also checked my conversion from PPM to EC and with my meter it's at EC of 1-1.2 (around 500PPM) So upped the nutrients but now the leaves started to curl up... before the new leaves on one plant where curling down! Seriously confusing, figure I'll up the nutes to 600 and if they don't look better by tomorrow then it may be too many nutes? so flush them for a few hours with 0PPM water and go to half nutes? Would seriously appreciate help with this if someone has an idea what's going wonky with these toms. Thanks for the comments and you're welcome. I was just trying to help a little because it seemed to be such an issue this year. buck, "how long, typically, does a young plant take to grow out of leaf roll?" You aren't going to like the answer. It varies. I've had some plants get over it fairly quickly (a couple of weeks or so give or take) and some plants it took a fairly long time (I recall a Rose plant in particular that must have taken over a month). I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I didn't take specific notes on the exact amount of time. "Oh, and one more Q, do PL's curl or roll?" I suppose they could, but I don't recall experiencing it. Right now none of my PLs do, but as you can see in the pictures RLs are doing it. And, not all RLs are doing it even though they were grown almost the exact same conditions (I didn't measure the exact amount of compost etc. in each hole). Randy

In our Oklahoma heat Cherokee Purple does great and the Brandywines do not, so I doubt it is a heat problem.

I have a very small garden and have a Cherokee Purple tomato in a container. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed the leaf curl. I was watering twice daily because of the extreme high heat. I thought I might be watering too much, so I have backed off to watering once a day and have moved the plant to an area where it gets some shade in the afternoon. What causes the leaf curl and what can I do about it. I don't want to lose the plant.

odd...I also have one variety with leaf curl this year...and this started with my second transplanting into a larger pot..before they went into the ground. It was on Aunt Ruby's German Green...I read that it could be psychological? or I guess we can translate that to stress? The one I have planted here is fine now, and I had given the other away...
other than that sometimes aphids get into the leaf and the leaf curls...good luck ;-> Martha/Zucchini
