Growing Tomatoes

My growing list this year

This is my second year growing tomatoes... last year here on Long Island it was a disaster with all the rain. This year, it appears its gonna be a bumper crop.

Carbon (black)

Black from Tula (black)

Gary'O Sena (black)

Costoluto Genovese

Franchi Red Pear (pear)

Ernie's Plump (pear)

Sweet 100s cherry

Sungold cherry

San Marzano Redorta (plum)

I started many indoors with lots of trouble, and also started the blacks and some pears wintersowed outdoors a good month later.. Not only did they catch up but are more vigorous and stocky.

Observations:

-Am getting alot of twin tomatoes, or several tomatoes stuck together and growing as one.

-Several tomatoes have spot BER but each plant has ones without it.

-the cherries are not far ahead like they were last year.

How is your Black from Tula doing?

Mine here in Zone 5 colorado in a 12gal container is a bit behind schedule, barely flowering.

My Black from Tulas are way ahead this year, they may actually be my first ripe full beefsteak-type tomato. This is my first year growing them and they seem to be doing outstandingly well. We've been in a off-and-on heat wave since the middle of May - commonly with daytime temps at or above 90, so who knows, maybe they just really like the heat.

Dick, these along with the Blue Greasy Grits were started in the greenhouse on May 26th, once they were planted out they grew quickly. When they should have been flowering we hit a hot spell, once it cooled down the flowers and then beans came in short order. I have enough seed for a couple of years so I'm not worried about seed this year, if the weather holds I just might get seed from both of these :). I still have to collect seed from several varieties but don't foresee any problems. Bird Egg #3 did it's thing again and I've already collected seed. Annette

@tsheets - I posted a few months ago on a couple of the different hab/fatali recipes we were fooling around with, including some cookies. Here's a link to that post: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/pepper/msg0913133225559.html The recipes in that post use habs, but we mostly use fatalis in our desert dishes now, when we have them available. The absolute best thing we ever made with fatalis or habs were fatali-almond caramels. I haven't poste pics or recipes for that, but I will one of these days. We can only have them 2 or 3 times a year, because we eat all of them until they are gone, as soon as they're done, and that isn't good for the waistline.

I grew them for the first time this year. They are very robust, producing large plants with many peppers. The green peppers still taste vegetable with little heat, so wait for them to change color. Highly recommended. (I will post photos, soon.)

I agree.. my Black Tulas are ahead of everything else, even the cherry tomatoes if you can imagine. Though I do not have a single ripe or even tinged colored tomato...all are robust, and GREEN, and im not that far from homegardenpa either, being on Long Island.

Something else notable...Ive had zero issues this year with pests, but have had alot of trouble growing salad greens, of all things.
