3rd year growing hots, can you help me with my growing list?

Hi! I have room for about 24 hot peppers in my garden. I make salsa (canned and fresh) and we cook a lot of Mexican/Thai/Indian food.

Nobody really likes pickled hots. We like them in salsa, or chopped up in chili or other hot foods. We love hot food!

These are the seeds I have, most are new to me this year. I was just wondering if I am missing something amazing. :)

Well, there are many popular and tasty types that are not on your list, but for sure, you should include the mighty Fatali in your garden. They are easy to grow, as hot as habaneros (or hotter) and with a different and very unique taste.

We use Fatalis in all sorts of dishes, but our favorite application is Fatali cookies and Fatali caramels.

We grew a new-to-us variety of squash this year called "Dinosaur Eggs". They don't get very big but boy, are they prolific, even in the awful weather we had this year. Most everything else went belly-up but these guys are STILL producing! So they are on the must-grow list for next year. The rest of my grow-again list is: Magda squash - not quite as prolific as DE but still outperformed zucchini and straightneck yellow (those 2 are out) Peas - Now or Later. We were super impressed with both production and taste Swiss Chard - Bright Lights. Love the flavor and the colors. Basil - Nufar and Lettuce Leaf. One for cooking and the other for just what it sounds like. It is SUPER on sandwiches. Parsley, both curly and Italian Lettuce - any of the mixed packages. I love the different colors and textures. Tomatoes - Estler's Mortgage Lifter, SunSugar and Black Cherry, not sure about what other varieties. Had a horrible tomato year this year so I didn't get to save any seeds for anything except the SS. All the ones in the garden died, but this volunteer came up IN THE DRIVEWAY (which is mixed gravel and sand, not concrete). It was very small but very healthy and determined to produce so I figure if it was strong enough to survive where it did, hopefully it will do well next year in a better location. I have about 2 dozen seeds I saved from it. Beans - bush - either Top Crop or Contender; runner - Scarlet. We grew the Scarlet Runners more or less just for fun because we'd never grown pole beans before. I only planted 12 seeds along the fence but we got beans for several meals just from those 12 plants. In fact, it is still blooming! I think I will also try some Kentucky Wonders for taste comparison. Corn - but probably a different variety than what we tried this year. Probably Peaches & Cream. Peppers - Banana, and bell, just not sure what varieties yet. On my no-more list are cabbage, broccoli, melons, beets and carrots. None of those have done well in the last few years and I am not going to waste real estate on them any more. As far as new things, I'm not sure yet. I am sure, however, that when the catalogs start rolling in in the next few weeks I will find more things than I have room for that I'd like to try! Edie

I don't post here a lot, but I do on the Canadian forums. I lurk here :-) I don't grow a lot of tomato varieties but I do grow for quality. This year I have one plant, grown form a seed of the original Gordon Graham tomato. He has the world's record largest tomato according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Through good fortune and a friend, I was able to trade for just a few seeds from Gordon Graham's world record tomato. I got one to germinate, so I have one tomato plant that is a direct child of his original! I do grow other tomatoes but I'm really excited about this one! We had a very bad tomato year last year with lots of BER. This year I planted the tomatoes in my good lasagne "wine" garden, dug in lots of old manure, a little lime and one Tums tablet in each hole. The same friend who gave me the seeds above, told me that a Tums will help supply the calcium the tomatoes need to help prevent BER. So I'm trying it. It's easy and cheap, so I figured "Why not?" We'll see how it goes. Needless to say, I baby that plant! In addition to that one, I am also growing our own heritage Portugal beefheart tomatoes (see link to pic below), San Marzano, Manitoba, Ailsa Craig, and Rev Morrow long keeper. @tsheets - I posted a few months ago on a couple of the different hab/fatali recipes we were fooling around with, including some cookies. Here's a link to that post:

The recipes in that post use habs, but we mostly use fatalis in our desert dishes now, when we have them available.

The absolute best thing we ever made with fatalis or habs were fatali-almond caramels. I haven't poste pics or recipes for that, but I will one of these days. We can only have them 2 or 3 times a year, because we eat all of them until they are gone, as soon as they're done, and that isn't good for the waistline.

Chocolate Hab, Bhut Jolokia, But you definitely have to try the Aji Limon ! Besides being a beautiful pepper it also tastes wonderful.

I have to agree with about Fatalii it is definatley a tasty hot and a must have same for the Aji Limon, some of the others that are listed such as the bhut, naga and scorpion are also excellent but if you are not familiar with them be forwarned that they are way beyond hot, atleast 3x hotter then a habanero.
I recently added a new one to my favorites its the Antillias Carribean Habanero, hotter then your average hab but has a unique flavor its fruity but not quite like other habs , very tasty.
not much else to add I think everyone else got ya covered all of the above that people listed are excellent choices.

I'm growing a few different varieties I've found this year that sound interesting.

Fish pepper
Lemon Drop pepper
Tobago seasoning pepper
chocolate habanero
and just plain old jalapenos

The fish peppers sounded particularly interesting with an extremely unique variagated foliage. Ordered them through cherrygal.com as you can get cheaper prices because they mail smaller packets. Makes it nice to be able to try a bunch of things without committing to way more seeds than one can grow.

If you don't like your Hungarian Wax peppers, have you tried frying them? First get your onions frying, and add the Hungarian Waxes half to two-thirds way through. This will establish some great flavor in your pan, and then you can add some cayennes or something to heat up the dish.
