Lary - Do you know what kind of salvia you planted? Don't give up on it yet. Most salvias are great, long blooming plants but some work better than others for hummingbirds. In my yard, they like species salvia guaranitica best which has blue/purple blooms. It's a perennial for me (barely). Black and Blue is a cultivar of guaranitica and has a great reputation as a hummingbird plant. I only had it one summer but it didn't return like the species. This year I tried a new strategy and planted groups of salvia splendens several places in my yard hoping it would serve as a beacon to get their attention even though it's not their favorite plant. It's bright red and cheap. It's the common red salvia that they have at places like Wal-Mart and Lowe's every year. You can buy it early, in flats, already blooming, and put it close to your other plants to see if it will draw them in. I also planted Lady in Red closeby. The blooms on it are a little more sparse especially early in the season but the hummingbirds seem to like it. My hummingbirds more than doubled this year....but that's not saying much since I only had two last year. lol BUT! If they double every year, it certainly is working well. I'm hoping. Maybe next year, if you have a sunny spot, try a bed with salvia 'Lady in Red', and 'Black and Blue' or the species guaranitica (or both) and then stick some big patches of red salvia splendens (cheap stuff from box stores) around the edges to help them notice it and to make it a little showier. With all the research that I've done, salvia 'Black and Blue' and 'Lady in Red' seem to be undisputed widespread favorites. Lady in Red is a cultivar of Salvia Coccinea by the way. I can't get red cardinal flower to grow well here. Maybe it's too hot and dry here in the summer.
