Trellis Vine Question

We are constructing a trellis for our backyard of cedar posts and bullwire. We are planning to plant yellow Lady Banks (thornless) climbing roses on it and using it as an evergreen screening for privacy. It is my understanding that the Lady Banks roses only bloom for a short period of time in the spring, however, so I was considering planting clematis along with it. My thought is we would then have two different blooms during the year, but would still have the evergreen vines of the roses when the clematis dies back. Thoughts? Suggestions? Is this not a good idea for some reason? Help!! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Since the Lady Banks rose will get very large, and the clematis will not, I would not plant them together. I have clematis planted with other climbers that do not run quite so rampant, and do so very successfully. My Lady Banks, on the other hand, has taken over my entire fence, and is going to have to be cut dramatically next month. Just my opinion.

what about confederate jasmine. Evergreen- not as crazy as Lady Banks. Maybe pair that with a clematis or even a moonflower.

First off, don't write off your clematis producing any blooms this year. It might just surprize you. Secondly, I am of the opinion that if you want your clematis to get itself established after chopping back, avoid planting anything too close to it that will compete with it and its water and nutrient source. Robert is correct that many annuals can become monsters since their life cycle is only one year. If you do plant something, I would suggest an annual that stays very small and you might want to plant the annual vine some distance away from where the clematis is planted and lead the vines of the annual to the trellis where you want it to climb. Again as Robert stated, don't let the foliage of the annual vine swamp out the vines of the clematis or the clematis won't be able to photosynthesis food so that it can mature properly.

if you are in the hot part - it will grow fast with plenty of water in the heat - in the cooler parts, i suspect it would be a little slower. I had a vine in Pittsburg that escaped its pot and took over our yard in about 2-5 years. it created a curtain over our deck and travelled under our lawn and up the tree on the other side by the 5th year - also once established i didn't do anything for it in the winter. now hte curtain was maybe 6 ft by 8ft of pure vine. it anchored on the top of the deck and hung - had a bird nest in it for several years. just planted another one a couple weeks ago - now south of SF - its already showing sings of clinging to everything in the vicinity and growing nicely.

I am also thinking of just using the lattice and railing of my deck to tie them up. The only problem I have with this is my two young daughters getting into them when they are on the deck. But it would not require any new material to purchase and set up. Plus I wouldn't have to construct anything even though I love to build things. Since this close planting is really just an experiment for me so that I can plant many different varieties this year, I would prefer to buy or build something I may not use in the future. I too love all of the different ideas I have found here. It always gives me lots to think about. Snowman

I wonder, if you pruned the end, would the vine make secondary branches that would fill in the trellis on its own?

In my opinion - I would never plant Lady Banks again. It took over everything and only looked attractive for maybe 3 weeks a year. To me it wasn't worth putting up with it the rest of the year. I had to constantly tie up new branches and I think if left alone it could pull down a fence.

I love my Lady Banks. She is planted in the easement where the utility companies can clear out all vegetation at any time. If you haven't guessed I'm resentful of them being able to dig up my plants so I put the world's largest rose,combined with a rampant maypop vine, to make the work harder.

That said, I believe the Lady B will tear down your trellis. It's the largest rose in the world and covers 8,000 sq ft in Tombstone, AZ.

The idea to interplant a less aggressive rose with Clematis is a popular choice. There are smaller heirloom roses avalible. PJ

pjtexgirl, here, the gas company just drives a huge chipper type machine down the easement, clearing everything in it's path. They told my neighbor to dig up her 5 year old crape myrtle and she just smiled and told them to cut it down, knowing it would come right back again.

I love the LB, but they can run wild. They need lots of space to grow and only bloom in the spring. If you want a rose, have you considered a climbing pinkie? It doesn't grow as wild, and mine stays in bloom most of the year. Another nice rose is the Zephirine Drouhin, and it is thornless.

pkgsknight, a trellis made out of bullwire? What is that?

I need to make one for blackberries. My wife wants it to be all wood though.

I have to begin with by saying that I love aggressive plants: Datura, passiflora, the type of morning glory that grows from roots, not seeds, salvias etc.

I do not have the courage to plant a Lady Banks rose. Have you seen a mature one? That's a lifetime of pruning. The question will be: will it be the rose's lifetime or yours....just kidding!

The zephy rose ltcollins mentioned grows fast, puts up long canes and smells divine. Biggest flush is in the spring. I didn't give mine enough room when I planted her. She can put up 10 ft long canes in every direction. But they are pliable and thornless.

I'm a big fan of vines: less trouble than roses. The passiflora carula is everygreen and you could mix it with a clematis if you like.

Our Lady Banks is 7 years old and has way overgrown the original trellis, but we love it. Today I added some trellis's behind it and hope it fills that out too. Just like your pets, they have to be trained, lol
