Hi: It might be Hawaiian Currant and Laurel's Heirloom tomatoes has them. I'm growing one right now but they haven't ripened yet. Hope this helps. cbad

Hawaiian Currant is red... sounds like something different, was it really orange? Nancy, were they really tiny sized (currant), or typical cherry tomato sized? Hawaiian Currant, Mexico Midget & Texas Wild are currant sized, like a large pea; were yours this small?

Hawaiian is also listed by Sandhill Preservation and has been so for many years.A while back I asked Glenn about Hawaiian since some were not sure it was a currant ( S.pimpinellifloium) vaariety.

Glenn said in his experience it wasn't and almost all listings for Hawaiian have been in the regular red section and not in the other species section of thje various SSE Yearbooks.

In the 2007 SSE Yearbook just one person from CA lists it in the other species section but does not ID it as a currant although I think that's what the intention was.

With tiny fruited varieties the question always remains is it a currant or is it just a tiny non-currant. Not everyone can tell the difference between the two based on the somewhat characteritic foliage of currant varieties as well as the truss structure, so I imagine there will always be confusion.

Adding to that confusion it's now known that some tiny fruited varieties, such as Sara's Galapagos, my fave, is a stable interspecies cross, making it even more difficult to categorize accessions such as that one.

To further complicate the picture it used to be thought that all currants had exherted stigmas, but that's not true.

If you look at the tiny fruited varieties offered in the online SSE catalog at seedsavers.org you'll see that they go out of their way to ID the tiny ones being, or not being currants.

korney19: The plant that I have is not a red cherry. I would think that it is something like a sun-gold but I never planted one before and the ones I planted this year do not have fruit yet. Definitely not red, looks more orange to me. Not currant and they are not quite the size of a cherry to me. More squashed and not perfectly round. Gosh, I wish I had a picture.

carolyn137: I will attempt to order from Sandhill Preservation. I looked it up and the description is not quite how I would describe what I have. I must admit that I could have gotten a mislabled plant. I have been pondering where I could have gotten this plant so that I could go ask them about the source but I cannot figure it out.

Nancy, there is another variety called Hawaiian Pineapple that's a typical gold/red bicolor with beefsteak shaped fruits. Is that a possibiity?

Also, when you go to the Sandhill Preservation website please note that you cannot order seeds at all times of the year. The times that you can are clearly noted at the website and in the catalog as well.

Carolyn, I went to the Tomato Growers Supply Co. catalog and Hawaiian Pineapple is not a possibility. It is not a beefsteak tomato. Maybe I was not clear and I apologize. I have eaten this mystery Hawaiian already and have decided that I LOVE IT. I was thinking that it may be like a Sun Gold which I planted this year but no fruit as of yet so I cannot compare. I should also note that the habit of the clusters are not like a cherry nor currant. Since there was not a description on the tag, I assumed that it was a mid-sized tomato by looking at the way the fruit were forming. I thought that they were not forming correctly. I will try to get a friend to help me with attaching a pic. I am sure that would help.

Thanks about the info about Sandhill, that is why I said I would attempt. It seems a bit difficult to order but I will try and experiment w/ their Hawaiian.

I have a listing in my notes for Hawaiian Cherry:

"Really a small cherry tomato & not a currant species; great tasting fruits less than a half inch diameter, blueberry sized, in large clusters. Very sweet lingering taste."

When I grew it out, I noted to see the pic for Texas Wild, they were so similar I didn't take a pic of Hawaiian Cherry but referred to the TX Wild pic as a good representation:

In all the years of taking tomato pics (see MyPage), I've never substituted a pic.

The description I had for Texas Wild:

"Very heavy set of ½" fruits on large, sprawling vines; excellent sweet flavor; remain on stems when ripe instead of falling or blowing off; great eating around the yard, in salads, as snacks for the kids, etc. Grows wild in south Texas."

One big difference I saw when grown side-by-side was that Texas Wild was hard to remove from the vine (similar to Matt's Wild Cherry's problem, but was even smaller than Matt's.) Hawaiian didn't have that problem but I don't think it went as far as having the Jointless gene (like Sungold & Juliet.)

My source for Hawaiian was Boo in Indiana. With cbadcali's defense of Laurel in the deleted thread, I'd venture to say cbad knows who Boo is, (who also knows Laurel, quite well.) I may even know cbad under a different name perhaps, from a different group?

I'd have to see if I can find the original envelope from Boo to see if she wrote "Hawaiian Cherry", "Hawaiian Currant", "Hawaiian Currant/Cherry" or "Hawaiian Cherry/Currant." It's been a few years...

Also, I think I wrote my description "Really a small cherry tomato & not a currant species..." because the fruit size was currant-like, maybe slightly larger, (hence the note to blueberries) but the foliage was cerisiforme-like, (like a typical cherry tom) and didn't have the dark, smooth stems and rounded leaves like Spoon or many currant pimpinellifolium types.
