proper shrub renovation is removal of 1/3 of the shrub .... each of three years ... and yes.. it looks ugly during year two and three ... this spring.. at each previous cut you made.. a bunch of new sprouts are going to start filling in at the bottom ... have no fear.. it will happen ... the problem with shearing at height ... is that the 6 to 12 new sprouts are going to be 2 feet off the ground ...and that branch will then start falling to the ground by the shear weight of the new growth ... have faith .. remove the second 1/3 this spring ... or just take the rest down.. and by fall .. you have a lovely .. renovated shrub ... NEVER shear a shrub .. in my opinion ... prune properly ... and it will achieve a wonderful habit .. of its own free will ... good luck no matter what you decide ... ken PS: personally .. after bloom .. i would remove the rest of the tall gangly stuff .... by which time.. you will see it sprouting from last years cuts ...

Yes - This rose definitely has Rust - in various stages. Very easy to tell are the rusty orange spots - they will later turn black and the leaves will start turning yellow. I get rid of roses that do this badly in my garden - some that only gets a little - I watch like a hawk every day - and remove every little leaf that has the tell tale orange spots - and spray to prevent the infection from spreading. I would remove all the affected leaves - and consider if it worth growing this particular variety - or if there are better more rust-resistant roses for your area. But if you like the rose - it will take a lot of work and spraying - and it may only keep the Rust at bay - all of us have to decide how far much work and spraying we are willing to do, in order to grow certain roses.

Mine are nearing the finish .............they have been blooming for sometime now.
