Sprinkle ground cayenne pepper all over the tomatoes. You can rinse it off after picking the ripe ones. Whatever is eating them will get a good burn from the pepper and probably won't want to come back for more. It works well for the rabbits on my red beet tops.

It could also be birds and/or some sort of worm/caterpillar.

I'm having issues with both right now and I live just south of Austin.

Look REALLY closely for Tomato Hornworms. I had them last year and was AMAZED at what giant bites they take out of my tomatoes. Ate most of the ones i had on my plant at the time - practically overnight. And their bites combine to look like larger teethmarks.

And if that's what it is, your barriers have just trapped them in there with the maters!

I don't think so. They're flying in. Birds. I have lost a huge portion of my tomato crop this year to birds. They are NOT after water (there's a swimming pool and waterfall in the same area) they are after seeds. Sometimes they'll peck a dime-size hole and probably get scared away. Left alone they will literally hollow out the tomato, leaving the skin. And now that I'm picking at first blush, they have learned to enjoy the green, unripe ones. I can't seem to win.

I have the same problem, sometimes half of the tomato is gone. Usually right before I'm going to pick it. I have flea beetles and stink bugs, surely this is something else though. I have been spraying Neem Oil every 7 days and this is helping with the F.B.'s.

I usually stake my indeterminate vine tomatoes, prune the suckers, and pull off the early lower hanging blossoms. This is to get stronger plants and bigger maters. I left the early blossoms on this Park's Whopper. I am assuming the bite marks are because the cottontails can reach them?

Squirrels are crafty, tomatoe loving rodents. Once you start to do battle with them it is like a game. The chipmunk will do the same damge but does'nt "seem" to be as vengeful as the squirreL.

I have battled squirrels before. They will literally ride your tallest plants to the ground and carry off the fruit to thier nests.......... watched it happen while chaseing them around w/ a whiffle ball bat years ago. Lost over 100 fruits in a matter of days while the garden was unattended.

The ONLY remedy once they have tasted tomatoe flesh is eradication(see Bill Murray in the movie Caddyshack) or keeping them out of the garden. and .

Your enclosure cannot have any entry points . I have seen them climb under bird netting and furiously claw at fabric to gain entry.

Any mercy you extend to them will be exploited.

So sorry about the tomatoes that were lost.
My remedy is Repels-All, a spray bottle found at "box stores" -- sells for about $13 here. It smells BAD. Spray it all around on your plants and after a rain, and no more rabbits/squirrels/dogs/cats in your garden.
Powdered Sevin for bugs, and Repels-All for critters is my answer.

Could it be a groundhog? They can breech a fence easily and are fond of eating half of the tomatoes. They would also leave teeth marks.
