Growing Tomatoes

First Ripe Tomatoes!!

had my first two ripe tomatoes today. i was going to post a picture, but coudn't resist eating them before i got the camera out.

they were two green grapes. they were wonderful. such difference in flavor and texture from the store tomatoes we've had to 'make do' with since the end of the last garden season.

it will be quite a while until i have ripe large tomatoes. i think the spirits of gardening gave me just a taste of real tomatoes to keep me from giving up!!

(the other 50+ plants are growing/setting on like crazty now that the temperatures are up a little. we should have 100's in the not-so-distant future!!)

Day 54 for the pots and 49 for the garden here.

Lots (several hundred ?) of greens but nothing blushing yet. A few starting to get that yellowy green of just prior to blush so maybe not much more than a week or so

4 Early Wonders tossed due to BER, one Carolina Gold, one Lemon Boy, all on otherwise healthy, robust, potted plants.

We've been enjoying them for about a month now but I took this pic of some of the first Cherokee Purple. the Lynnwood, kmicic, black sea man and tarasenko 2 are all ripening like mad in the hot weather we've been having. I'll make the first batch of tomato jam tomorrow.

Those tomatoes look great. BLTs sound delicious. It will be a while yet before my full sized tomatoes are ready. Glad you can enjoy them now. Saw another Sun Sugar turning color so expect they will need picking regularly soon. Sweet Million tomatoes are still green. Will buy some other varieties when the farmers market starts having ripe heirloom tomatoes. Thanks, gorbelly. KBAV, I am curious what varieties you are growing. I also have a Cherokee Carbon, a Brandy Boy, a Sweet Million and a late planted Black Krim that I picked up at the Plymouth Plant Swap. Cut back on the number of varieties this year. Started with two but ended up with these five. Great news, shell. Will be thinking of you picking and eating good tomatoes this weekend. Temps will be in the 90s here. Hot for us but good for ripening tomatoes.

Wow! That's a beauty .... Looks delicious. We just got back from downtown Kansas City. We went to meet our daughter for dinner (we live about 40 miles south of KC) .... heirloom tomatoes are on the chef specials in many of the restaurants right now. I'm giving away boxes of heirlooms to friends and my DH's co-workers. I should have taken several boxes with me .... I bet I could have sold them on the spot at the restaurant we went to this evening. Anyway, the large tomatoes are just starting to ripen. Brandy Boys, Purple Dog Creek, Korol Rannikh and Virginia Sweets are up next!

thank you!

i've got lots-o-blossoms now. lots of teeny tomatoes starting to show.

i thought i'd NEVER have anything going in the garden after the late cold, wet weather here in nebraska this spring.

we had rain again thursday night and late friday afternoon. not typical weather for our area.

not so many years ago it would be dry and brown just shortly after july 4th. now it stays green well into august.

Here are pics of my first ripe tomatoes taken yesterday. My wife is out picking them right now. First pic is in the "hothouse", second is hydroponic in the greenhouse, and third is hydro grown in the greenhouse. First two are Stupice.

Weather here along the coastal reaches of far northern California is partly sunny, highs along the coast in the low 60's, 45-50 at night. Cooler California magic, but far too cool to grow tomatoes out of doors. All the best, Jim
