Burpee Blossom Set spray

Anyone ever try it? The 2 reviews on their website were glowing -- imagine that! So since I don't trust product endorsements in catalogs, etc, thought I'd check here before ordering.

Lots of discussions on it linked below edie and it looks like most consider it a waste of money.

So since I don't trust product endorsements in catalogs, etc.

I'd say...trust those good instincts of yours. ;)

I bought some jsut for the heck of it since I was already ordering seeds and used it this spring on my plants I am just now getting tomato sets but I am not sure if that is any earlier then the last two years I have been growing them. I doubt I would buy it again but should have left one plant without spray for a comparison.

Good question. I've never had problems with fruitset - only the cold nights slowing growth & ripening. From experience, I can say there's no need to worry if your nutritional supplementation program is in the ballpark and you're supplying other favorable cultural conditions (light, temperature, proper watering, a well-aerated soil, ....). I would concentrate my efforts on ensuring I could place checks in the favorable column for each of those items on the short list. Al

squash setting only male blossoms

Mother Nature has been mean this year. I usually have no problems with getting winter or summer squashes. However this year, I've only had a handful of summer squashes and the beginnings of 2 winter squashes. With the number of plants I've planted, I should be loaded. I also seem to be getting only male blooms. I've been plucking off all but one of them on the plants in hopes it'll spark new flower growth & some females.

Early in the season I had tiny squash that didn't ever grow; my garden book explained that this was due to the absence of male blossoms to pollinate them. I removed those first few fruits. Then male and female blossoms started emerging together and we had a couple weeks of plentiful squash. Now most of my first succession of summer squash (yellow crookneck and patty-pan--the zucchini are fine) are loaded with male blossoms and have few or no fruits set. These squash are also dusted with a white substance which I believe to be powdery mildew; could this be related to the problem? I'm spraying with baking soda solution for the powdery mildew. Can I do anything to encourage the development of female blossoms?

The only warning on this stuff is to not drink it. There is a pdf of the lable. I used to use that stuff.I don't see any difference in the Foli-Cal and the Blossom Set except the price. I never saw my buds open instantly with blossum set either. I do think the calcium helps grow more buds though. I use a light mix of Fish emultion and Seaweed extract for my plants about every time I water so I doubt that I am lacking in any of my plants fertilizer needs as far as a nutrient deficiency goes. Peppers just like extra calcium when they bossom. I only grow hot peppers so I never tried either spray on anything else. Here is a link that might be useful: foli-cal site

Edie,
This is one discussion I've heard even before my internet days. I've seen good gardener's that swear by it and good gardener's that don't use it just like me. It is like anything else if you feel compelled to try it do a comparison. If you get more produce then do it. I personally don't feel it benefits me. But JMO. Jay

edie, in addition to the excellent link that Dirt gave you why not also go to the FAQ link at the top of this page and read about Blossom Drop and read what's there about use of blossom set products.

To wit, they were designed to be used ONLY when temps are too cool for normal pollination to occur.

In addition, since they allow fruit set in the absence of pollination, a process called parthenocarpy, fruit development is not normal.

Fruits can be misshapen, and mealy and there are few seeds ( for sure b'c no fertilization or little, occurs)and of course that's a problem for seed savers.

There are many maufacturers of Blossom Set. I don't know which one Burpee is offering. All of them have a plant hormone in them and the one I know best is indole acetic acid.

Not worth it unless you live in some place like the PNW, maybe, where Springs are very cool indeed. And there folks often grow the varieties bred by Dr, James Baggett of OSU, which are parthenocarpic to start with.

Thank you all. You confirmed what I kinda suspected. I'll just go out and shake all the plants good again tonight when I get home! I really appreciate the help.
