Hi All and Kristen, An interesting question; Why do we love Bromeliads? I'm an avid plants collector since i was very young. I first collected plants when i was in high school. The first one who introduced me into world of plants is my father. He loved and grew a lot of orchids before I was born. I grew together with orchids. My father brought me to everywhere he enjoyed with orchids. I've absorbed his inspiration. Begined with caladium, a beautiful colourful aroid still popular in Thailand but difficult to keep. Then orchids, cacti&succulents , palms&cycads , anthuriums , others and the last bromeliads. About bromeliads, I went to plant market many years ago and found a small red plant hanging from a basket. It was very nice. I asked the seller what it was. He said it was a bromeliad. I bought it and took it back. I didnt know much about this plant. I searched for the information and found and interesting source of these plants. After I joined BSI, my world of bromeliads is opened. There are a lot to learn. I found that bromeliads are plants that easy to care, less pests, less disease, need less attention and less fertilizer. In particular they are beautiful year round, has so many colors and forms. And also after joining this forum I found that there are so many lovely people around the world has the same thing and willing to share their knowledge. ;-) Thats why I love bromeliads Cheers Yong

Here you go - 100+ discussions on pruning. :-) If you really want to read them. But you are right that it is strictly an "opinion" issue and depends on the type (det. vs. indet.) of tomato, what support system you use, what spacing you use (I'd never use 1' or even an 18" spacing no matter how much I pruned), your particular growing conditions, how many plants you grow, how much time you have to devote to plant care, and what your primary goal is. Sooo - evidence of what? Less work if you don't prune? Amen, especially if you grow lots of plants. Better yield? That one is pretty straight forward. If you remove productive branches from the plant you lose production. Bigger fruit? Possibly but highly debated. Some studies show a mild, measurable increase in size of some fruit, some show little to none. More size increase seems to come from removing blooms rather than branches. Overall plant health? Too many variables in the growing conditions provided to prove one way or another but pruning is removing the plant's primary source of photosynthesis and destroying much of its secondary circulation system so draw your own conclusions. Taste? No way to quantify it. Plant size? The more you prune an indeterminate the taller the plant gets. Been there and done that with stakes, sprawl, tripods, tepees, cattle pannels, cages, etc. So if you use stakes you will very likely have to do some extensive pruning. Same with string supports. Cages (real cages not the 3 ring things) none is required. Florida weave - none required. Cattle panels - some required. To me the important point about the to prune or not to prune question is that the act of pruning is strictly optional, that there is absolutely no truth to the old wives tale that has hung around for a century and keeps rearing its ugly head that you MUST prune, that you MUST remove suckers, etc. That is what I take issue with. Otherwise, once the gardener understands the effects it has on the plant, weighs the pros and cons, then it is personal choice. Dave Here is a link that might be useful: Pruning discussions

yes please do. somehow i was infected with vine fever this year (planted mgs after several years of not, a mandavilla (sp?), thurbergia with purple flowers and a passiflora!.... maybe the answer lies within the article!!!!.
btw, according to feng shui, climbers represent growth/positive energy (in contrast to some trailing/downwards/drooping plants>>>>neg energy. they have a whole bunch of theories re vines and if anyone is interested i'll post a link to an article.

Hey...I don't see a link??? Maybe Audrey II ate it??? :o)

Vines...woooeeee...let's see...I got several yellow mandevillas, lots of thunbergias - blue, orange, all white and white with a black eye, three allamandas (can't remember what color they are...they haven't bloomed yet), hyacinth beans...purple and white...but they haven't bloomed yet either, red passion flower, purple passion flower, vigna caracalla (no blooms yet either), phaseoulus giganteus, morning glories - yellow (ochracea,obscura, beni chidori and blue robe)...hmmm what else? Oh two dutchman's pipes, snapdragon vine (I think - no blooms yet), a few hoyas, some air potato vines, that bright lime green sweet potato vine and a yam that started growing in my refrigerator :o)

And....I still have some Japanese morning glory seeds I plan to plant in the fall. I need a bigger yard!!!

Feng shui? Positive energy? Way cool!!! My backyard is starting to look like a jungle with all the vines, plants and banana trees back there.

...but I'll call it real positive energy when my vines start weeding for me and also mow my lawn :o) Heh! Heh!

ps...in addition to my yam story...I once lived in a house were the hot water heater was sitting inside the pantry but off to one side...a few taters must've rolled out of the bag and ended up behind the hot water heater....several weeks later I really freaked myself out when I stepped over to get something out of the pantry and saw long pale tendrils coming out from under the door!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!! It's Audrey III!!!

They never received sunlight so the vines grew out a pale white. Scarrrrrrry!!!

See what happens when you eat out all the time and don't cook :o) Heh! Heh!
