I planted out the first week of March and a few straglers toward the end of March. They're all history now after a very good production that began with May.

I grow in containers which exacerbates the heat problem. By the second week in June when temps got consistently in the mid to high 90s, they decided to quit. Several continue to bloom but it's too hot and humid for them to set fruit. The plants are browning fast.

I'm taking cuttings and starting seeds for plant out around August 1-10.

You have very different growing seasons and much earlier planting dates there in Florida than do many of us. But a search using 'Florida tomatoes' will find you many prior discussions to review if you wish and the folks over on the Florida Gardening forum can be a big help too. ;)

Most seem to discuss the importance of much earlier planting because by now your first garden season is over. Then you can plant again in the lucky fall to early winter season that the rest of us envy.

Once the higher heat and humidity sets in fruit set is done for all of us - the pollen isn't viable - so planting to get fruit set early is one of the keys to success. The fruit that is on the plant will ripen fine and if you can baby the plants through till fall they will kick back into production.

It's getting time to pull the plants. I transplanted mid March and production began first week of May. I'm still harvesting Sun Golds and be for a little while longer. I potted a few SG suckers, so we'll see if they make it. If not, I'll buy a few transplants next month.

So basically there's nothing I can do?

I'm in Dallas and it was 100+ most of last week. The worst day it was about 110 in the "shade shanty" in the afternoon.

We're at the end of our season in hot climates, even with heat tolerant varities. I've had some success encouraging fruit production doing the following:

* Moving plants as possible to a morning-sun location.

* Putting plants under a shade cloth (the "shade shanty") to protect them from intense afternoon sun.

* giving their cages some good shakes to try and jostle clumpy pollen loose.

Mostly though the tomatoes are done. My pepper plants are the ones who seem really happy and are fruiting like mad.

So basically there's nothing I can do?

Well you can try the suggestions above but basically this year is done for you as the others have said. That is unless you can baby the plants through until the weather cools. If they are indeterminates they will start to grow and produce again then. But they won't do anything more now.

Next year you'll need to plant much earlier than you did this year so use this year as a learning and research time. Research "growing tomatoes in Florida" and the unique situations there, talk to your local county AG extension about proper planting times, chat with the folks on the Florida Gardening forum to learn about proper planting times in your area and varieties that work well for them, get bigger containers, construct some shady areas if possible, etc.

Then root some cuttings off of your existing plants or any cuttings you can bum from friends and use them to plant come Florida's fall tomato growing season. Many Floridians report it is the best tomato season anyway. ;)
